Thread: Any way to build confidence?

Default Any way to build confidence?

For some reason, I do a lot better than I do in practice than I do in an actual match. I give up too easily and I always get broken down mentally. I'm losing matches that I know I can win. I just don't have the mentality.

Now, I come here for help from you guys! Is there ANY way at all I can build up my confidence? I'm positive that I'm doing better in practices because I don't have to worry about risks or losing. In matches I don't have the balls to shoot, shoot, shoot. I freeze up a lot during scrambles and that ends up with me down by another 2. I'm feeling great and pretty confident about the coming season, but when I think about the higher level competition it just gets to me. I feel inferior and weak.

Since you have lost a match before, what happened afterwords? Did your parents quit loving you or your friends quit liking you? Did they have a ticker-tape parade around town mocking you? Or, did you feel worse than anybody about the loss, especially if you thought you could have won?

If you've already lost before and know that life goes on, then there should be no reason to fear it. Getting nervous is normal, but fearing loss is only hurting your potential. A lot of athletes have the same problem, so don't feel alone. I would just keep running through my head (in the offseason) what happened after you lost. Pretty soon you'll realize that a loss can actually help you be more aggressive for the next match. Good luck!! Keep us posted on your progress.

My thought on this thread are the same for the thread on aggressiveness.

You can paint stripes on a horse but it's still a horse not a zebra. What I mean is that for the most part you are who you are. You need to accept yourself as you are---knowing only certain elements can be improved on.

Almost every practice we had devoted a fair amount of time to drill urgency scoring.

Basically we'd have one minute goes to score as many points as possible. We'd be put in various situations: feet, bottom, and top. Each set of wrestlers kept their own score for the go with the loser usually paying a penalty of running or climbing.

This drill helped not only in conditioning (because we had them usually once we were already fatigued) but developed an aggressive attack mentality. I assume during practice that you fight for every position, every tie, every score anyway. If not you should be asking yourself why and start.

Confidence and aggressiveness are related and largely how you practice is how you perform. Practicing this way should pour over into your matches.

Despite your personality you can develop a style or mentality of wrestling that is more geared toward scoring and scoring often.

If your coach is already drilling this then it's up to you to buy into the drill more and push yourself. If your coach isn't you might find a tactful way to approach your coach with it. I suspect it's already being done as most colleges I've spent time with drill this way.

You can definitely build confidence and increase aggressiveness and I think they go hand in hand.

You build self confidence by working harder and longer than your opponent every day.

You increase aggressiveness by knowing what you've trained on will work and having the confidence to use it.

Yeah, I'm always on the attack when I'm going up against someone I know I can beat. But it's just the titles and names that get to me. I'm thinking I just need to work harder and harder and the mindset of a champion will come sooner or later. Pretty vague question, but thanks for the help.

Maybe you just need to start your season off with some mock matches against some guys from jr. high. Think of it like one of the season openers that major college football teams go.
