A teammate was putting this guy on his back before he started tapping out. Teammate got 4 nearfall points, then later got pinned. Hell, the kid wasn't even hurt or anything. Can't they lose fairly?

I agree with this. There is the cry out rule which is where you should have gotten the extra nearfall point. Did you get the extrapoint?

The coach was at the table saying his kid was tapping out. I informed him that there is no tap out rule.

In the NFHS rule book on page 30 Rule 6 section 4 article 4 it states:
Any couch of the contestant or the contestant has the prerogative to default a match to the opponent at any time by informing the referee. It does not say anything about tapping out.

If the shoulders are close enough and someone starts to tap I will just call a pin.

My thoughts exactly glad to see that from a ref in colorado.

Just to clarify, there is no such "scream rule" in the NFHS rule book.

What is in there, is a rule that states, should the match be stopped for injury or blood time by the referee, then an additional point shall be added to any nearfall points earned. If nearfall was immenent (i.e., criteria met, but no 3-count yet), a 2-point nearfall shall be awarded.

I hope they don't ever water down the rules .....if you're on your back then get off of it or get pinned ...should be that simple . I understand a stoppage for an injury or blood time but this isn't MMA : you don't tap out .

It's not a penalty point. It is usually awarded because of an injury during a pinning situation or impending pinning situation and therefore is not a penalty point, but simply an extra earned backpoint.

According to the rule cited, if you interpret the tapping as a request to default the match, you should call a default, not a pin. "Close enough" does not qualify as a pin.

I am a coach in the youth wrestling in Michigan and had this happen to one of my wrestlers today. Was asked to see the rule and the Head referee was unable to produce the actual rule. He did have this to say " That it is the discretion of each referee to make the decision if the wrestler is injured or faking to get a restart. My wrestler was in a pinning combo about 2 seconds from the pin. Wouldnt it be nice if you didnt like the start just tap give up 4 points and start over?

i was working a table at jv districs and the ref stopped the match during a near fall because the kid was getting coached out, he gave the other kid 4 points, in this situation i think its a good rule, but i think it should only be if the ref stops it, not if the kid taps, thats just cheep
