Hello, Im a High School coach and we have a upcoming conference tournament only four teams in our conference offer wrestling (Which Sucks) so now all the coaches are in a I think stupid discussion of how this tournament should be ran. so my question to the more experienced coaches on here is this(If you are a college wrestler or have strong knowledge you may comment as well,Please be detailed) Which format should we use a "Round Robin" or "Double Elimination"?Please be detailed in your comment. Thank you! |

| Round of 12 |
You shouldn't look at this as EITHER a double eliminiation or a RR format. If the bracket has more than 5 wrestlers, put them into a double elimination format. 5 or less, should be a round robin. This is done at youth and JH tournaments all the time. Considering the low numbers you're going to see, going to a double eliminiation ONLY tournament doesn't make much sense. The same could be said for an all Round Robin tournament. If there are 8 wrestlers in the bracket, that's 56 bouts at one weight class, 7 per wrestler...that's too many and your day is going to drag on for far too long.

I agree with Badcat. It depends on how many of those teams have 2 guys entered at each weight. If all four teams are two deep then you have a nice 8 man tournament. You may also want to ask your AD to check out the League/Region/State's SOP's. It may tell you what you have to do. I know that we changed our conference tournament up a lot this year but before we could we (all the coaches) had to draft a proposal to change the SOP, submit it to our ADs who then approved it. You can even do a Round Robin with 6 in a weight class, that gives everyone 5 matches on the day, be sure though to decide how you are going to decide the number 1 guy is you have a 3 way tie (wrestler A beats B, B beats C, C beats A) you need to make this decision ahead of time, and come up with a TON of tie breakers, more than you think you could ever need, if you don't you'll come up just shy and end up deciding things with a random draw or coin flip. We used (for our home tournament which is ran in a pod style) Common opponent Pin>Tech>Maj>Dec Penalty Points given Total points/margin of victory Most total nearfalls Most 3 point nearfalls Most 2 point near falls Most takedown Most reversals Most escapes fewest stalling calls fewest cautions total time wrestled first points scored Random Draw
