I need some input. Right now, I'm a Sophomore in HS and weigh about 137. I don't know if I should try and get to Varsity or just settle for JV. If I want to wrestle on Varsity, I'll be dropping down to 130 and if I stay on JV I'll be at either 130 or 135. I really want to letter, but I'm not really sure I'm ready for better competition. I also have 2 more years to letter. So, should I try to make it to Varsity or stay with JV for my Sophomore year? I'll most likely be Varsity my Junior and Senior years. It'll also be a fun experience on JV this year because a lot of my friends will be there but the competition will be a bit too easy. It sounds a bit like I'm babbling, but I don't know what to do! |

I say go for varsity. If you are beating jv wrestlers because the competition is too easy, then you aren't being challenged. If you aren't being challenged, then you probably won't improve. Who knows, you may suprise yourself with some quality wins.

Do you want to win now, or win later? You will be markedly better your last two years even if you take your lumps this year.

i wrestled varsity for 4 years and i don't regret it..i would wrestle varsity even if you only win 10 matches you still have a ok record and you have competition that you want. you'll learn more and be stronger for years to come and you'll know what you have to do to improve and become a better wrestler for your junior and senior year

I agree. There's no substitute for varsity competition, even if you take your lumps. Don't worry about getting a letter or having a winning season; concentrate on improving your weaknesses and developing your strengths and the rest will come. If you can make the weight, go for it.

I hate when anyone uses the word "settle"...It shows me that you need to really rethink your approach. I'm not being hard on you, young man, but you need to get your mind right for the upcoming season. half of your success is going to be mental wins. Let me give you an example. I had a wrestler who was pretty good, but he heard from his teammates that his next opponent was a super stud who placed 4th at states. My wrestler gets teched in the 2nd period. He comes off the mat and says "I could have done much better"...he asked the kid for an exibition match and lost 10-4. The moral of the story is that if your head isn't right, your body follows. Go 100%, or settle for mediocrity. It's your decision. |

I am a sophmore in high school right now and last year during freshmen year Coach had me wrestling varsiy 171 because there was no one else. I learned alot of moves and got better. I suggest varsity if you can go. I got my letter and not many kids that are freshmen at my school had there letterman jacket. Its alot of fun and you will see your freinds. I say go varsity.
