is it normal to be scared to wrestle somebody in competition? i dont know why but i get mixed feelings the days leading up to competition, its a feeling of being nervous to lose and fear. i hate those feelings it really holds me back from wrestling. i also think that i get nervous because i dont want to dissapoint my coaches... but the feeling i get the most is fear. in the wrestling room during practice and open mats, i wrestle with multiple time state champions with no problem, no fear and no nervousness. i even surprise myself with how well i actually wrestle. but when it comes to wrestling people that i KNOW i should be beating i again start to get terrified of losing, or getting taken down, because if i lose i start thinking that i suck, and im worried that my teammates might start thinking that i suck. the fear also hits me hard during a wrestle off. i know this sounds sort of like a confusing question, but im trying to type everything that i feel goes through my head during competition. im really hoping that you guys could help me out with this. i know there are people here that have gotten really far in wrestling who could help me out, or some coaches that could help me out. THANKS!!!!! |

Sounds like you're concentrating on everyone else and their opinions of you rather than focusing on the match at hand. Don't worry about the outside influences, focus on your opponent. If he gets a shot on you and takes you down...so what...fight harder. If you lose a match, find out why and correct it. If anyone questions your ability, punch them in the mouth and tell them to have a nice day. Wrestling is about strategy and kicking your opponents ass. Nothing else matters once you set foot in the circle. Nothing.

Yes it is normal. Focus on the act of wrestling well, rather than the final result. Instead of thinking about winning or losing focus on taking good shots, staying in solid position, and wrestling smart. The wins will come, and losing a wrestling match isn't the end of the world either. |

here's the thing, whether you're scared or not doesn't matter THAT much. You just gotta get through your head that you CAN'T WIN if you DON'T SHOOT. SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT, and RESHOOT. If you see something, go for it. Work on your SHORT OFFENSE so that you can recover from a bad shot if needbe.
