    Default FloNationals 2010?

I've got to say this would be awesome, but I imagine it will be hard to pull it off. There are a lot of all-star things going on around that time. Hopefully this comes to fruition and they will get a lot of top talent. I have my doubts, though.

Here is another interview with Walsh Jesuit coach Bill Barger:

Perhaps the best part is we'd get to see it all

    Jason,

I am interested in your thoughts on this idea, you seem a bit skeptical.

There's a slew of things to be concerned about. But since MF thinks he's wrestling's savior, I'll let him figure them out on his own.

But in a nutshell, I'd be worried about eligibility, invitations, issues with high school athletes receiving "freebies" in a tournament that could be used as a recruiting tool for programs, the eligibility issue (perhaps) with an "organization" which is paid by college wrestling programs to promote their product and directly marketing those athletes to said programs. That's just ONE thing I'd be worried about. A "media" entity paid by colleges to cover their events now dictating who gets invited to an invitational?

There are several states which have rules about "invite" or "selected" all-star teams and events.

I just hope this doesn't cost some kid his eligibility, because we all know that rules are optional with said individual.

Competition could be good, but I already know OhioBob won't be a part of it. Can't just "cookie cutter" the Ironman at Walsh and expect it to be good. Bill Barger is the man, but ultimately ...

... going after Bob Ferraro's dates with the NHSCA Nationals = NOT smart. Then again, the NHSCA had ESPN360 broadcasting this year, so Flo wasn't at H.S. Nationals. What's Flo do in response? Start their own tournament. I guess starting a tournament is easier than spell-checking another blog.

This is extremely insightful and helpful, I greatly appreciate your response. I am of the sincere hope that Martin and team do everything in their power to protect the interests of the athletes who participate in this event. I am very interested in the criteria used to determine the invitees, as good for the sport as Flo has been, there are definite instances where favoritism has been shown. I am very hopeful this great idea comes to fruition but the concerns you have identified need to be taken into consideration.

The kids/coaches should be familiar with what affects their eligibility. For example, we couldn't have Oklahoma kids at the Super 32 one year because it was prior to November 1 (or something like that, I don't remember the specifics). Whenever any coaches/wrestlers/parents contact us and ask if they are "eligible" we tell them to check with their state's athletic association.

Ferraro and the NHSCA tried to run the Super 32 out of business by every underhanded means they could think of when they were holding their preseason "nationals" in North Carolina. If someone wants to try to run a tournament on the same date as an already established event, it's up to the "rookie" to try to put out a better product. If they do, great, certainly there are enough good wrestlers to sustain multiple events on the same weekend. If they don't, then the tournament will fold. Hopefully it will push both the promoters/directors of both events to put on outstanding tourneys.
