Default Recep Kara of Turkey - second time oiled champ

29 June ? 1 July 2007, the Kirkpinar tournament was held. With more than 1.500 wrestlers participating (in various age devisions and master devisions) it is the biggest oil wrestling event in Turkey ? kind of nationals.

Recep [Turkish C = English J] Kara who is also a heavyweight freestyle wrestler (5th at at 2006 worlds) won his second Kirkpinar title in the Başpehlivan division. Başpehlivans are the highest ranked (usually, but not necessarily heavyweight) wrestlers. There some 50 Başpehlivans in Turkey.

Kara won his first title in 2004. In 2005, he couldn't participate because of an injury he got at the 2005 European freestyle championships two months earlier. In 2006, he lost the final. Yesterday he made successful comeback.

    Some pics from the event:

Last year Kara lost the final to a newcomer in a very stupid way. He felt to his back while preparing to execute a throw. Here the video:

Notice that in oil-wrestling, there is no PIN-fall rule. Your shoulders touch the ground for a second and you are already the loser (even if it is you who is executing the technique).

Even if you dislike that style of wrestling, watch the video to see the crowds in the stadium - tens thousands fans! (Also I was there but the video isn't sharp enough to allow you to see me )

For anybody who might be interested in the Kirkpinar event (sportive rules, cultural customs, wrestlers, oil, politics, money etc.), these two reports (for the 2004 and 2005 tournaments) are very good and very informative:

I take it is legal to reach down the other guy's pants.
Definitely gives new meaning to "checking the oil"

This has always been topic #1 in the FAQ about oil-wrestling in Turkey and in the Balkan countries!

It is both legal and legitim.

Note that the pants are oiled and they are quite thick - made of at least 2 layers of leather put together. So, it is almost impossible to take a grip on the pants. That is why there are several other options how to take a hold in order to turn or to lift and throw an opponent. One of them is to ?reach down? the pants with the one arm. The chances to lift him are bigger, if you put you arm deeper and deeper?. You arm must be up to the elbow in his trousers, so that this part of your arm is not just behind his a$$, but also in the trouser leg of his pants. At the same time, with the other hand you must grip the cuff at his knee. Then you can try to lift him and throw him to his back. Like this:

    Another hold for the lift:

    "Preventive measures":
    1. Carefully tightening the belt (it is a rope)

    2. and the tightropes under the knees. Look at the kneeing guy in the picture below (BTW, this is Kenan Simsek, silver medallist at the 1992 Olympics) and
    3. Oiling amply both the inner layer of the pants and the ?content? of the pants. Look at the other guy in the picture:

I used photos from the last week tournament.

Also a note, grabbing the guys balls (or any other part of his "equipment") is against the rules and will result in getting punch in the face.
