    akzent,

Why do you think Africans almost never win at worlds and Olympics? Their genetic counterparts from Cuba do pretty well.

From my limited experience with African wrestlers I got the impression they are not that interested in technique and drilling. They seem to rely on their power and other physical attributes which go only so far on the biggest stage.

Are you talking about genetics again? Which other physical attributes? The legs maybe? Let me quote a wrestler/coach, a friend of mine from a westeuropean country talking about his experience with wrestlers from a westafrican country at a tourney in Europe an year ago.

The wrestlers from [that country] don't attack, never, they just wait, and because they have very long legs (disproportioned if we compare the standart with Europeans), they over pass the legs of the attakers to counter. They are also strong of course.
Big, I can introduce you to him. I think you will have a great partner to discuss wrestling-related genetec issues

I got the same impression. They almost never attack, They are very strong, good endurance, and they are quick and explosive with their defense and throws BUT if your technique is crisp enough you get them every time. They don't see a shot coming very well. They hope that you will be out of position and they can counter. If your position is good you are almost always ok.

    Is Bakhtiar related to Shukri?

Bakhtiar looked bad against Mocco and Musulbes but those might have just been off days for him.

    I find he lacks size.

His style is terrible for HWTs of a decent size. He shoots and goes to his knees. Mocco will eat him up like that. He is not a fast shooter either. If he stays away from his shots he might have a chance since he is pretty slick. Then again, he is not that big to resist the pushing of Mocco and others. We will see.

Frankly I am at a loss why Russia doesn't have its own wrestlers of Mussulbes and Taimazov caliber. Why does Russia rely on 20 year olds to fill a HWT spot? Russia hasn't had a consistent HWT champ in freestyle in a decade since Mussulbes stopped competing.

That Makhov guy did well at Worlds last year.

There were rumours of that match being thrown though. Rumours.

Big, I've wrestled in South Africa. The African countries by and large don't have the resources to build a world-class wrestling program, not the training partners. It's a long flight for a poor federation to compete against world-class athletes. Many of the best African wrestlers train abroad (Karem Gaber, maybe?). My roommates who were on the national team went to Colorado springs to prepare for the olympic trails.

And yes, in my experience (with just one club, mind you) a lot of time was spent on conditioning and strength training compared to little time on drilling.
