Default Bye to finals at the trials?

Why do some weights have people who get a bye to the best of 3 finals at the trials, and some don't?

The criteria for 2008 National Champion to sit out of the Olympic Games Team Trials
tournament and face the tournament winner in a best of three matches follows:

    Men’s Freestyle
    • Top Ten finish from the 2005-07 Senior World Championships
    • 2005 University World Medalist
    • 2005-07 Junior World Medalist
    • Multiple-time World Team member

    Greco-Roman
    • Individuals placing 5th or higher at the 2005-07 Greco-Roman World
    Championships

    Women’s Freestyle
    • All 2008 Senior National Champions at the Olympic Weight categories will sit
out of the Olympic Games Team Trials and face the trials winner in a best of three
    matches

At the weight categories where the 2008 National
Champion has not met the criteria to sit out of the Trials Tournament, the finals of the
Trials Tournament will be a best of three matches. This will also be the case where the
2008 National Champion has been granted a delay of the Final Wrestle-off for the
Olympic Team by the appropriate Sport Committee.

That seems excessively complicated. I remember watching an interview with Doug Schwab after he won US nationals and he said he still didn't know if he would get a bye or not. Seems like a better idea is to a) give all national champions a "bye", b) give all defending team members a bye or c) no bye at all.

Then again, having BOTH a national championship and then a team trial also seems complicated

Agree. Way too complicated for this fan. The constant rule and criteria changes drive me nuts.

I think this is a problem with fs/gr wrestling in general. Too complicated, and this is from someone who likes the new fs rules (maybe because I was good at running people out of bounds?).

The scoring is excessively complicated, and I'm a lifelong freestyle wrestler . Even the simple pushout is too complicated- was the guy on his feet? Did he finish the takedown as he was stepping out? Whose hand touched a split second first? And don't even get me started on the scoring from the clinch. Suddenly sitting down means giving up a point? Give me a break.

Agreed even after reading your explanations/criteria/whatever I am still lost....How would Schwab not know. Seems stupid

Why, if this is the criteria for greco, did Lester have to wrestle the challenge tournament?

I agree- why wrestle a National Championship and then an Olympic Trial, especially just weeks apart? Not only does it make it way more difficult to market, since its just about the exact same athletes, it doubles athlete travel, room/board expenses and other "MISC" expenses accrued by wrestling in events that are not near your home.

... But by having both, USAW can make twice the money on admission and vendor villages..... or they could turn it into one large event and draw twice the fans to it by marketing it more... Not to harp on them because I know they are busy, but Fighting Leagues have been all over us to promote their events, and I've never seen anything from USAW regarding similar event promotion..
