If National champions go to Olympics.....
then I don't even know what to think. Many of the veterans disappointed and some young guys have done really well but don't have too much experience Internationally. This team can really be hit or miss for the most part with the exception of Cormier.
Re: If National champions go to Olympics.....
I would say Lawal, Cormier, and Rowlands all have done fairly well internationally and should all be in the running for a medal, most likely Bronze.
Schawb had a good World toournament last year to finish 5th, but I don't see him repeating that run. Askren has shown promise.
Azevedo & Bunch are the surprises and I don't know of any international results and these two remain long shots to make the Olympic team.
Re: If National champions go to Olympics.....
Well 121 got interesting. Cejudo's wrestle to win 1-0 seems to have bit him on the butt.
132 Didn't have two of the top guys.
145 Like it or not Schwab is our guy it seems.
162 Askren in a changing of the guard.
184 Lawal cemented his spot
211 Cormier toughest battle in this country is as I said.... making the weight.
HT Rowlands seems to own Mocco. Both are capable heavyweights.
As far as the Olympics,
121- If Abas makes the weight (he hasn't yet), or Cejudo gets back to the top, either 'could' medal. I am not as confident in the others.
132 - We are a long shot here.
145 - We are a long shot here.
162 - Hey, I like Askrens chances of medaling. He is adapting quickly with a style that could cause trouble to those who haven't wrestled him before.
184 - One of our better medal hopes.
211 - Another one of our better medal hopes.
Ht - A possible medal.
These sort of results seem to happen every Olympic cycle.
Re: If National champions go to Olympics.....
In other words sgallan it can possibly be the same result as last year at worlds.

When is USWA going to wake up and hire BIG as the coach for the freestyle team?

I can't. I don't take high altitude very well.

Maybe, and I wouldn't be surprised, but as a wrestling nation - especially during the Olympics - we are an enigma. We seem to have wrestlers come out of nowhere and do the unexpected. Maybe Azvedo this year? Or wrestlers do the impossible (Slay over Satiev). You can't count on our doing this, and Russia will win these games as usual, but for some reason the USA sort of comes out of nowhere, and often during the Olympics. For whatever reason this has been (generally speaking) a USA wrestling trait.
FWIW, this is in freestyle. In greco we are players as a nation.
Re: If National champions go to Olympics.....
I hope we do better in greco than at the world cup this year.
Re: If National champions go to Olympics.....
I probably ought to stay off the "International" board because all of you are far more knowledgeable than I. The homer in me can't resist.
I've been watching Doug Schwab wrestle since he was a sophomore in high school (close to 15 years now) and the one thing I've learned in that time is NEVER count him out. I'm not naive enough to believe that he is the best wrestler in the world at 66KG. But - can he medal in Beijing? I've watched him beat far too many wrestlers that were "better" than him. Don't toss him into the "also-ran" heap so quickly.
