Why penalize the guys who compete in freestyle all year. They don't have to wrestle folkstyle. You can't rank everybody. Thats why there are rankings.

How do you penalize the ranked guys?

How timely. I just finished reading this week's Sports Illustrated and they had a big article about the Russian Basketball team and how important Basketball is now to Russia and to Putin. they talk about the Russian Superleague and how it is the 2nd best (after the NBA) basketball league in the world. They also focus on CSKA (formerly and still referred to as the Red Army Team)

    Quote from the article:
"...high-end clubs of the Russian Superleague have more money to spend than most of their European rivals. Russia's vast natural resources and the ambitions of president Putin have recast basketball as a metric of the nation's new identity - even if that identity is often cast by foriegners. The coach...an Italian yells at his three American players, two Greeks, a Slovenian, a Lithuanian, a Belgian, an Australian and a half-dozen Russians in English.."

Back on subject, I feel that a trials system is by far the best. I agree having the qualifying tournament directly before the trials is not good. But having the coaches pick the team would be disastorous. I imagine the politics and favoritism that would become involved. Also, there is a bunch of US wrestlers with no international accomplishments that have earned World & Olympic medals. Off the top of my head Slay, Eggum, Jamil Kelly.

US Track & Field is by far the best in the world at many events and they have a trials even though track is a sport where you can compare results unbiasedly on paper, unless wrestling. There are yaers when a world record holder has a bad day or is injured and ends up staying home. In 1988, Dan O'Brien was defending World Champ in the decathlon and no-heighted in the pole vault during the trials and stayed home.

finally, lets face facts the Russians are the best in the world and have incredible depth. They could pull names out of a hat and still have the best team in the world.

Well the Russian coaches don't just pick the team out of the blue. Instead of one trial they have a few trial steps. First come the international victories. Then the nationals. Finally they have closed matches where the winner is determined. Its a more balanced system than a victory in one day.

Both the coaches and the wrestlers in Russia are aware and told what they have to do to make the team.

Does anyone else on the board remember when Martina Navratilova defected to US ,? She immediately gained 50 pounds and was a wreck although training just as hard -that was back in the good old USSR when they would pull an athlete

out of school and send them to an elite camp where ,knowingly or unknowingly, the kids were fed steroids in Damn near everything-
I remember that female creature who ran the 400 meters had a physique I would have died for , but that was the old evil empire -not the new WONDERPOWER where everyone wants to live today.

This is what I am talking about. Most of the guys that wrestled yesterday are getting killed or injured. Bergman and Owen are already injured.
