Strange that they'd give the 55 kg Russian a "free pass" to the Olympics, but other more dominant wrestlers at other weights still have to earn their spot.

Yes, but the other dominate wrestlers have tough competition at home. Kudukhov doesn't really get challeged domestically. Otarsultanov is very good but Kudo has proven he can consistantly beat him. Kudo doesn't really have any other competition.

otarsultanov and kudukhov are both outstanding, but everyone else is prety far behind in russia. So its a prety easy choice to make.

Also, all other weights have wrestlers that can potentially be replaced by moving someone up. Gatsalov moved up for example when Russia had problems at 96kg. Also, Batirov moved up to 60 after Russia had trouble. These 55kg wrestlers cannot be replaced since there is really no lower category with serious competitors so Russia is extra careful to keep these little guys healthy.

good point, havent though of that. Altho there are probly enough 50 kg wrestlers, but i guess they would just be too small.

Its not that 50kg wrestlers are too small. They could easily grow a bit. Its more them not being experienced on a senior level since there are no major Senior level competitions for them.
