Thread: Alexander Karelin trainings

    Default Alexander Karelin trainings

So do any of you know how much did Karelin train during his prime? I have read from he's homepage that in the basic season he trained 6 days a week, monday-tuesday running and wrestling, wendesday wrestler's basketball, thursday-friday running and wrestling and saturday soccer.

During the preperation for the big tournaments he trained two to three times per day.

So Iam just wondering that he didn't train so much during basic season, only one evening training session 4 days a week. What do you think?

Also, why he didn't ever use any standing moves, like armbars or something like that.

And do any of you know how much does he bench?

    Thank you.

You have to remember he trained consistently all year around. When you train all year around you can't go nuts all the time. Also, he really went hard during those sessions. Supposedly nobody could last the whole 2 hours with him.

I don't know how much he coulD bench. I read that he was so flexible despite being so big that he could raise his leg above his head.

Thank you for you answer! You right, I think it's more wise to train the preparition season's very effectively, than train yourself two to three times per day whole season, you are getting overtrained.

I suppose you mean standard moves like an arm bar. He did. In fact, from an arm drag he would transition straight to a bar arm and turn those fat bastards over like a roast turkey and pin them.

Yeah... unless you annoyed him, then he would pick them up and pile drive them to their heads.

Can anyone find a youtube of anyone using this sort of technique. I would really like to see any wrestling technique transition to an armbar from anybody, especially Karelin as it flows perffectly with Jiu Jitsu

My understanding of karlins weight regime was very little bench pressing, lots of Olympc style lifts, kettlebelss and partner body weight exercises.

Bench pressing is a good exercise if you are going to immobilize someone but Greco is almost entirely about strnegth endurance and explosion, which is mostly having a strong posterior chain and explosive strength.

Freestyle requires a ittle more in the way of leg endurance so I think the ideal weight training involves high rep front squatting, circuit training of course and agility drils.

I woud bet Karelin could snatch and clean and press a ton; more likely he excelled at assistance lifts like push presses and the like. The more sport specific you are the more specific you're conditioning must be. Greco is as sport specific as I can think of besides boxing perhaps, and requires a very very specific set of abilities. bench pressing probably is the least of it unless he just threw it in for good measure
