Russian wrestling was well developed in the 80s when I was there. Judo didn't have nearly as many clubs and participants as freestyle and greco. 6 of my classmates did either Freestyle or Greco but none did Judo.

Just looked at the stats. Soviet Union/Russia have 16 Gold Olympic medals in Judo overall.. Soviet Union/Russia rank 4th in Gold medals and 3rd in in medals overall. These are pitiful numbers with regard to freestyle and even Greco.

Judo was simply never that popular in Russia is all I am saying.

Fourth in golds, third in all medals, but not that popular? Do you have any participation numbers? Or are you sticking with the anecdotal evidence sort of research?

Soviet Union was good in any sport it really wanted to be good at. Lack of Olympic Golds simply means Judo was not that popular.

And like I said, when I lived there, I didn't see that much Judo.

Some of the best wrestlers exist less than 100 miles from America and we act as though they don't exist.
