I knew that Fadzaev had gone up to 74 kg in 1989 and won the Soviet Nationals but was unaware that he was up at 74 kg for the 1990 Nationals as well. Anyway, a good friend sent me these matches. Arsen Fadzaev v. Adlan Varaev 1 1990 Soviet Nationals Arsen Fadzaev v. Nasir Gadjikhanov 1990 Soviet Nationals Arsen Fadzaev v. Adlan Varaev 2 1990 Soviet Nationals |

This footage is a rare because a) it was held in the Buryat Republic (E. Siberia) and was most likely not filmed or televised and b) very few Russians owned a cam-corder ca. 1990. Interesting because Gadjikhanov should have been World champ that year, he screwed up in his match against the Bulgarian Sofiyadi (Sukra) in the World Finals. And at the 1991 Worlds Gadjikhanov was in a double DQ match with Monday (score 0-0). Just shows you how great Fadzaev actually was. Fadzaev was down at 149 for the Worlds that year and didn't surrender a single point. Amazing. BTW I'm still trying to figure out how Fadzaev won the match against Gadjikhanov. I know he was penalized for grabbing Fadzaev's singlet, but was that his 3rd caution or something and thus DQ'ed? Because the match ended 1-1 and it should have been OT. |
