Thread: Matt Gentry wins Canadian Olympic Wrestling Trials

    Default Matt Gentry wins Canadian Olympic Wrestling Trials

    I was just checking out the results from Canada's Olympic Trials this weekend and I saw that former NCAA Champ Matt Gentry won at 74 kg. I don't think Canada has qualified this weight for the Olympics yet, but I hope Matt does so at one of the qualification tourneys and gets to go to Beijing!

    Here are the full brackets from the Trials in PDF format:
    [PDF="http://www.oawa.ca/events/ot/trials%20drawsheet.pdf"]dh[/PDF]

    In case they are a little confusing, Canada has a crazy Olympic Trials Qualifier system. First, athletes who didn't place top 3 at nationals wrestle a line bracket in the "pool" competition.

    The winner of the pool then wrestles a match with whoever took 3rd at Canadian Nationals.

    The winner of that match then wrestles a match w/ the nationals 2nd place.

    Then the winner of that bout wrestles 2 out of 3 with the national champ to see who goes to the Olympics.

    That is great news! Khetag Pliev didn't fare so well though.

    Khetag was close, he won the first match between him an zilberman, then he lost a very close 2nd match, an lost again in a very close 3rd, but khetag was very impressive in his matches, Gentry was in no danger at all in his 2 matches, he tooled that other guy he was wrestling

    i think if khetag was in better shape he would have won yesterday. he always scored first but by the end of the third round was almost falling over and couldn't quite stop zilberman. he did get thrown for five in the second match - those two gave us 9 rounds of great wrestling. they only went to the clinch once (that i remember) and they're 96 kg!

    Also, I thought Sissauri was going to try out. Is he injured and will compete later or is he done?

    From what i understand Gia is injured and will wrestle Saeed Azarbayjani for the spot another time, and this is just a rumor but I heard that Evan Macdonald will challenge Haislan Garcia for his spot, but that is not confirmed.
