Default A financial incentive for American wrestlers if they win Olympic Gold

America, the richest country on Earth, will provide $25K for its wrestlers (If they already won a World medal previously) if they win an Olympic Gold medal.

$25,000 for an Olympic gold medal by a multiple medalist who meets requirements

Just to compare: any Russian wrestler that wins Olympic Gold will receive $500K or more in prizes.

Why would it have to be the wrong thread? He could be saying that they don't put enough emphasis on education....

Wrong thread because this discussion is about wrestling compensation as a fact. No need to compare each country's education or health care or nuclear arsenal or charity or religious donations and so on.

When I was at Penn State I took a Sports philosophy class and the Professor explained it to us this way:

Sports or physical proficiency is surely a form of education. A sport develops the brain and the body no less than books and classrooms. Don't worry about too many people getting distracted from work by participating though. Take wrestling for example. Surely it is not practical for a large majority of a country's citizens to try out for Olympics in wrestling. However, that will not happen if only the best wrestlers are compensated well. The others will give up their pursuit since they are not good enough.

However, it would add handsomely to the health and development of a country's citizens if many of them are proficient to some extent in a sport of wrestling and practice it for most of their lives. And what better way to promote citizens' participation in a sport than by having a country embrace and promote the best, the most talented wrestling heroes with a just compensation?

Iranian olympic gold medal winners recieved 110000 $ for 2004 Athens and may increase for Beijing. Also 80000$ for silver and 60000$ for bronze.

americans do not get compensated so much for sport because more importance is put on a persons ability to serve society. russian wrestlers spend their whole life training and a very select few get compensated a great deal. in america, we spend our time learning to better our country, and many will get compensated far more than 500k in a lifetime for how they spend their time. you could offer a million per gold and americans would not do any better.

    persons ability to serve society

So, by your American way of thinking winning Olympic medals for your country serves no purpose to society. There is much more to serving one's society than flipping burgers and joining the military so to speak. The spirit needs some nourishment as well and Olympic glory gives people just that.
