I don't think you are being biased at all. Herbert beat the 5 seed in the final, not so sure his road was any more difficult than Varner's, beating the 4th seed in the final. The talk after the tournament was speculation about Most outstanding wrestler. After Mocco surrendered a period in his final, Varner was the overwhelming choice for MOW. Herbert's name was not mentioned by any of the people i was sitting next to. It was about 80/20 Varner over Mocco. Hearing Herbert's name announced was very surprising.

So how do the US trial work? Do the national champs get to sit out the mini-tournament or do they just get a # 1 seed?

Any top wrestlers who didnt show expected to be wrestling at the trails? Since I've been paying attention (which really isn't that long) I haven't seen a weaker US open field.

BTW It's pretty cool that both the Paulson's won.

I believe he's trying to make the NFL. He was having trouble getting down to weight. I'm sure there are others who can either confirm this or correct me.

They used to let the US Nationals winner sit out the mini-tournament, but they don't do that anymore.

They've got a number of criteria that if you qualify for one of them (and no I don't remember right off hand what they are, and no I don't think any of the Champions this year qualify) and win Nationals then you can sit out of the mini.

They'll get the #1 seed at Trials I think thats pretty much it.

I never quite understood the purpose of having a national championship and then a trials (arguably the "real" national championshiip") afterwards, but I guess it works.

With the Nationals Champ not getting the automatic bye out the mini-tournament you give the bigger name guys even less reason to come wrestle at Nationals.

I think he is just too big to make the weight. Cole is a big tall dude. I also heard NFL stuff.

Also, I was surprised that Mocco didn't get the MOW, 2 pins a tech and a win over a legit opponent I thought would have been enough, but I can see why varner is many peoples initial instinct.

Maybe people thought we were revoting for the hodge?

I believe Kole was concentrating on Greco. He was having trouble climbing the ladder and making 264 lbs.

Last report was he was puruing an NFL career.

Paulson vs Schwab. Paulson looks strong as hell, but not particularly slick.

Only at heavyweight would you see a guy at the US open pinned like this

works a pretty cool turn, a kind of combination high-gut/headlock.

A few other matches on themat.com, anyone got final videos?

ESPN has the rights for the finals, so we won't be seeing them for a while.
