""Dagestani and Chechnyan people became very intereted in this style and the habit of wrestlers from those countries being the best was born.""

Did North Ossetia become good later?

Ossetia as well. I was just giving examples. When I was in Russia, we traveled to wrestle those guys at some big tourneys. I was like 12-13 and I was a champion of Leningrad for my age. However, those guys were just on another level even at 12-13 years old.

PS In Russia internal tourneys usually ran for one or two ages only. For example, a tourney could be for 1976-77 years of birth only. Or 1976 only. You had to present your certificate of birth date at the weigh ins.

That's bunch of medals to hand out at the end of the tournament.

They usually would have only one tourney at a time for a particular age. It was easy to have tournaments in Russia. Most clubs had huge wrestling rooms, the size of a basketball court. There were probably like 10 different clubs fully sponsored by the government for freestyle in Leningrad alone.

They didn't give medals or placks too much. Most of the time they gave certificates describing which tournament it was and what you placed. Then, they gave gifts like a painting or a sculpture for 1st places. At one tournament in Moldova they gave a lamb (live one) to the winner of each weight class

They had ranks in Soviet Union and the rank of "International Master of Sport" was equal to that of a PHD in any academic field. You had to beat some good international guys to get it.

They started with different levels (1,2,3) for a Junior, then Senior, then Candidate into Master of Sport, then Master of Sport. They had certain standards like winning certain tourneys and beating certain amount of guys on a certain level to get to those levels.

Of course, you could become "Master of Sport" as early as at 16 or 17 years old if you won the right tournaments.

The higher was your rank, the more help you got from the government and to more tournaments you would be taken.

Today I talked with Zaur Kuramagomedov. He is BALKAR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkars) from Kabardino-Balkaria republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabardino-Balkaria)

2nd day (greco 60, 74, 96). Great performances by the Georgians Kvirkvelia at 74 and Nozadze at 96. They will wrestle in the finals in 3 hours.
