Thread: US WTT discussion, predictions, and results.

My thoughts (from following on track and facebook- haven't seen any video)..

The 7 point tech is stupid, but it seems to be working as FILA intended. Guys are putting their opponents away instead of scoring early and sitting on their lead.

Jordan fricken' Burroughs... how many nail biters has he had during his undefeated streak? JB not only has superior skills and superhuman speed, he's absolutely brilliant in the clutch. From what I understand Dake had a late lead; still wasn't enough. Under international rules Dake wins the match on criteria, but as Dake himself said on Facebook, "points should be points. Shouldn't matter how you score them". I hope FILA pays attention to how excited fans get about OT.

I thought for sure Lester would retire after the Olympics, but not only is he back but he sucks down to 66 again. I hope he finally wins a world title this year.

Quite honestly, the improvement that Dake made from the 1st match to the 2nd was pretty unbelievable. He definitely didn't respect Burroughs' single and double leg ability until he got dominated by it. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I could see Dake beating Burroughs in the future, he adapts better than nearly anyone I've ever seen in changing his gameplan based upon his competitor. I wish he would have won the second match so that we could have seen the third.

Dake definitely has the capacity to beat Burroughs; frankly, I was more surprised by the first result than the second. Under international criteria Dake wins #2, I think (scored a 3 pointer). However, the thing with Burroughs is that many have come close. Tsargush was literally one second away from beating him; Aliyev one referee's conference away. Howe was pretty close too. However, JB keeps pulling it out.

I hope this video gets posted soon.

    Wow. Just, wow.

JB should spend some time with the greco wrestlers. Guys are going to keep trying to throw him now that it's a match ending criteria. Not just Dake either- the Russian rep (I'm assuming it willbe Khubetzy or Geduev) is geat with throws.

Metcalf beats Oliver 6-3, Metcalf looked really solid there, Oliver couldn't figure him out at all. Oliver gassed a bit in the last 30 but he was beaten before that anyway.

    Great highlights.
How close was Dake's throw to being a 5 pointer?
Does the wrestler have to get thrown flat to his back for 5 points?

This might be the best freestyle tournament I've seen for Metcalf in a while, he dominated Russell in the first match. He looks more relaxed (or maybe less stiff, whatever) than he usually is in neutral. He seems quicker because of that, imo.

He's got to land in danger (ie on his back) in order to give up 5 as well as going high amplitude. You see throws like that in greco quite a bit- 3 points not five. However, this bring up an important point: if FILA insists on having 5-pointers end the match thery need to make sure all refs are completely clear on the criteria for a 5, and that no watered-down 5 are given out. There's been some high profile matches lately (Pendleton/Sandhu, Taghavi/Metcalf) where a standard feet-to-back double was given 5 for some reason. That can't happen anymore.

Speaking of throws, how exciting is it to see greco scores that aren't 1-0 or 2-0?

Metcalf beats Russell 7-0 and then 8-1, that's the best I've ever seen Metcalf wrestle, holy crap. Beats Oliver convincingly and then dominates Russell. Dominant.
