I think yazdani was the 1st person i've seen score a leg shot on him at 96.

And ODH gassed? Yeah from pressure, clearly you don't watch many brands matches, yazdani overwhelmed him with pressure and slick leg shot and shot defence, deny as much as you want that was one of the best matches of the tournament, if you disagree you're simply trolling.
You call this match the real final and ignore the results of the tournament
I will call Gadisov the winner over Yazdani and ignore the scoreboard as well.
The IOC disagrees with both of us.

In all seriousness, it was a good match and a great match for fans of Yazdani. He did an awesome job wearing out Gadisov, who himself was impressive almost winning the third when he was clearly out of gas in the 2nd.

I guess some people believe if you beat someone once, you will automatically beat them again. Varner lost three times at the World Cup. You're assuming Varner's good day at the Games was atypical. What about his bad day at the World Cup. Maybe THAT was the bad day.

How many times do wrestlers beat each other in this sport? There is no guarantee Yazdani, as good as he is, would have beaten Varner or vice versa.

Injuries happen in wrestling. The disrespect of an OLYMPIC CHAMPION coming from some of the Iranian fans is distasteful. Injuries are part of the sport. Yazdani might have been the best in the weight, but we'll never know, you still have to wrestle.

If your body gets hurt, who's fault is that? Not Varner's.

Maybe Varner made adjustments from the World Cup and tweaked things. Blind faith in one athlete and dismissing another is actually insulting the entire sport. It's unfortunate you're acting like the bad apple of the bunch in a sport where most Iranian fans I've met are grateful and respectful of the sport.

For starters Varner did well, I'm not debating that, i'm just saying he isn't number 1 not by a long way, and I've spoken to plenty of US fans and Iranian fans who think the same that if he wrestled yazdani or Gadisov he would lose.
The guys he wrestled at olympics weren't the guys that beat him at the world cup, gogshelidze had torn ligaments in that match hence his grimacing throughout the tournament, varner still did well winning the match, he beat who was in front of him, but I do feel the draw and the way things went basically gift wrapped an olympic draw for him, doesn't mean he didn't have to earn it. Seems like too many of you guys are getting upset because you know its true, i've had fans from both countries and russians say that varner wouldn't have beaten yazdani or gadisov, a chechyen was saying to me that he believes Musaev could've won the gold if yazdani had pulled out earlier, so don't group people together in what they think about the match.

It is funny that this debate is occurring becasue I don't think there are many on this site who are willing to rank Varner #1. This still does not detract from the fact that he won the Gold (in the real final) by beating everyone in front him.
Add this to his World Bronze and he has to be considered among the elite at 96kg.

What's amusing is the fans in those countries know little about Varner other than a few instances where he's lost at the World Cup, a bronze at the World and a DNP in 2009. What makes them any more qualified to have their opinion mean more than anyone else's?

It's still disgraceful and insulting to the sport of wrestling to continually make excuses as to why someone won a tournament, claiming "gift draws" and "less challenging" opponents. It's the Olympics. There isn't the amount of fluff that there is in a World Championship.

I'm not "upset" due to anything remotely close ... I'm celebrating Jake Varner as the 2012 Olympic Champion at 96kg ... something NO ONE ELSE can claim. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda ... but didn't.

Varner's the champion. At least you're classy enough to not claim steroids like some of your colleagues did with the other Olympic champion from the U.S.

We could also say every other wrestler with a bump or bruise would have won it. It comes off as disrespectful. Are we sitting here making excuses for the "easy draws" the Iranians or Russians got in other weights? "Gift Draw" is only relevant when it's on paper, not actually on the mat.

Varner is and has been an elite wrestler since his ISU days .The only NEAR loss i remember was when the genetic freak from Cal Baker threw him yet landed OB. IT is dam hard for a big guy to go unbeaten in these days of mutant sized kids .
You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.

Thank you for proving my point that some people peak their bodies for the World Cup and some for the Olympics. Who is to say Varner wasnt dinged up or trained through the World cup? You dont know. I dont know how it is in other places but in America we want to be our best when it matters most. Not the World Cup. Keeping yourself healthy is a part of competition. Thats part of where Varner beat everyone Being Healthy and fresh, though you will refuse to acknowledge that point.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

Gogshelidze wasn't at the world cup, and injuries can happen regardless of you trying to be safe or not.

Varner is the Olympic Champion. Nothing anyone can say will ever remove him from atop the podium.
