Thread: Cejudo press conference.

    Default Cejudo press conference.

What do you guys make of this video. He said a lot of stuff and some of his comments really caught me off guard. I'm not sure if it's just emotions after a dream not realized or what he's trying to say.

It was an 18 minute commercial of cliches. Self promotion. Tired of hearing the same thing from him every time.

Dude realized as soon as he won that gold medal four years ago he just punched his ticket to making money for the rest of his life. I am very proud of what he did for USA wrestling and his story is a HECK of an American dream type story, but that all ended the moment he realized how much money he could make after winning. To me he's lost his desire to compete, to make something of himself for himself, seems to me now he's been back in the sport for the last year only due to the pressure from the wrestling community and from sponsors... He's going to go give promotional talks, continue his modeling, motivational speaking, guest appearances and make his money, which I don't blame him for, but I lost a little bit for him from this half assed effort it seemed to me he gave at making the team again.

Yea that interview was gross and not genuine or candid. The guy's twitter just talks about his corporate sponsors as "family". Also, not too sure his corporate sponsors knew he wasn't going to make the team as they tried to ramp up awareness for the Olympics.

He used that interview as a way to emphasize his "story". "Son of an illegal immigrant Mother". "From the Ghetto". Blah blah blah.

It is a great story.....but when a wrestling journalist asks you specifics about the match.....the answer should not come back to your mexican heritage or your poor upbringing. Robles never did that.

That's kinda what I thought. I used to be a big Cejudo fan but I am tired of hearing him say the same thing over and over again and only use wrestling to generate hype for his book/speaking/other revenue stream.

Not to mention the wrestlers from russia in dagestan and chechnya make his childhood seem sheltered.

Proctor & Gamble had just ramped up advertising with him and his Mom in advance of London. Guess they'll be nixing that campaign in short order.

Elena Pirozhkova has a pretty cool story as well.

Well, I have to disagree with you guys on this. I've read Cejudo's book and you wouldn't believe actually how poor he was while growing up. The first time he even had his own bed or even his own pillow was when he moved in to the OTC. He childhood was horrible. You can't compare it to children in dagestan and chechnya because the kids there were not surrounded by the same type of wealth from other kids that he was. His childhood compared to his neighbors was just as bad as the kids in dagestan and chechnya compared to their neighbors.

The guy knows of no other way to make money than what he's doing. I can't find fault in a person trying to make sure he never has to live the hobo life again. He isn't very well educated because of constant moving in the middle of the night and no real father figure to make sure he does his studies. I would hesitate to be so hard on a guy for trying to ensure that he doesn't go back to poverty.

Now, maybe he needs to update his motivational speech so he isn't saying the same thing all the time, but I can't fault him for continuing to tell his story. I also won't fault Robles 4 years from now when you're all sick of hearing his story too.
