Not questioning that Frayer will have his work cut out for him. I guess I'm just not that impressed with Metcalf. Not like we're talking about Burroughs or Varner being upset here.

Frayer beat world 5th place finisher Haislan Garcia, whom Metcalf is 1-2 against. Metcalf had that one great tournament where he knocked of Hasaynov, and I thought he'd made a step up, but results afterwards (1-1 at the Yarygin, loss in qualifier finals, close win against a 60 kg wrestler here and losses to Frayer) don't cement him as a medal favorite. Sure, there's a style matchup here. Metcalf takes a lot of bad shots, Frayer is great at countering shots. Still, the world's top freestylers are going to be just as effective at countering.

2012 Pan Am: 66 KG FS Gold: Brent Metcalf (USA) vs. Haslan Garcia (CAN) - YouTube Metcalf/Garcia. Note the high-crotch counter, I haven't seen the Frayer matches but I imagine this situation happened a lot.
Olympic Trials Runner-up Brent Metcalf - YouTube Metcalf talking about his finals matches.

I think it becomes too much emphasis on who wins at home tournaments rather than who wins internationally like with iran lashgari, alireza goudarzi and mostafa jokar do well in iran but struggle internationally where mirzaei and amini can win internationally but have lapses from time to time in national competitions.
Brandon Slay, Jamill Kelley and Garret Lowney are some examples of US wrestlers who pulled upsets at the trials and had no international reputation and went onto to win Olympic medals and I am sure there are others especially if you start looking at World Teams.
I still like our system it is not like we have a large number of medal favorites that are staying home. Most of our guys will not be favored to medal no matter who we send.

What were Cross' credentials before he beat Brands?

I like and respect the heck out of Brent Metcalf, but he'd had years to prove himself as an International medal favorite and he hasn't done it. Frayer has a much more suitable style for freestyle and honestly would rather have him in London after seeing them both this weekend. Metcalf looked way too one dimensional in his matches - heck he could have very easily (same may say should have) lost to Pami and didn't exactly dominate Churella.

I can easily see why people may prefer Metcalf, but I simply don't see how Frayer making the team is a grave injustice based on their international careers and this weekend's performance. And I consider myself a Metcalf fan...

Metcalf I sow him at the test tourn, then at the Yarygin tourn where he won Abakarov (Abakarov is one of top Dagestan's wrestlers! Who won Mavlet Batyrov RusN-2010). He was closely perfect. I like his wrestling. My mind he hade big chance for Olympic medal ( silver or bronze, not gold). I believe maybe next cycle will be more successful for him.

i love the way metcalf wrestles, but in terms of pure talent and athleticsm, he's not quite at the level in freestyle. i was rooting for him throughout this tourney, but starting w/ the oliver bout, he wasn't impressive. you gotta respect his pace and tenacity, but too bad his style didn't transition the way it should've in freestyle. i think ware would've beaten him again had he gotten past frayer in the semi's.

I was thinking about the NCAA conference of those who won OTT's and noticed that the Big 8 did awfully well. Normally the B1G gets the majority of honors at NCAA's, but the Big 8 had 5 of its former wrestlers win OTT: Oklahoma--Hazelwinkle, Frayer; OSU--Scott; ISU--Varner; Nebraska--Burroughs. The B1G only had Herbert. And UNKearney had Dlagnev. I haven't followed freestly with enough consistency to know how that has played out over the years, but the Big 8 does seem to have a lot of good freestylers. I wonder if there is any reason for that?
