Thread: Cael has let us all down

Default Cael has let us all down

The guy makes our world team last year dominating our world silver medalist. Then goes out and taked fifth place.
He is better than anyone we have at his weight.
    Now, he quits.

As big a letdown as when he quit after winning Olympic Gold before when many saw him having the potential of John Smith. Except Smith had the drive to go with the talent. Cael, for some odd reason did not have that drive. His only way to go was up as he won Gold using folkstyle technique and personal drive. With more training and coaching he would have been a top wrestler for a long time to come, barring major injury.

So, last year he comes in to give it another try and shows he can still do it to the American competitors - and doesn't look bad on the world stage.

    So now - he quits.

No matter his personal reason, this hurts US wrestling.

I agree with this a bit in that herbert or someone else could've have more top international experience rather than jumping straight into the olympics.

I know you don't care about his personal reasons and neither do I, but I accept them as perfectly reasonable. It is a free country and if he didn't want to compete then he is free not too. I know he's better than Herbert, but I like Herbert and will be glad to see him go to the Olympics (assuming he does). I think a focused and determined Herbert will represent the US better than an unfocused and bored Cael. That fifth place showing was obvious that he wasn't focused.

The fifth place showing shows how tough international competition is. I don't think that he backed away because he was afraid or bored, my belief is that his other commitments, family and coaching, kept him from having the ability to train like he needed to or that he did not have the drive anymore and he realized this.

Although I hoped to see him back I am more disappointment in his retirement after 2004 than this. Cejudo lack of competition since his Gold has been a disappointment to me as well.

Yes it hurts our team, but I sure dont blame him or think less of him. He realized that he wasnt the best in the world unless he could dedicate himself to training. He cant, so he didnt. Dont get this animosity, but coming from you it is less than surprising.
To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

    Animosity? no.

    Disappointment? Yes.

All that talent and potential and he quits.

It was not injury problems, knees and such like Gable.

We really need a way for our top guys to stay in the Sport so this does not happen again.

Given your history of outlandish threads/posts related to Sanderson, animosity is what it sure seems like.

I have a tendency to do that.
