Default One Strong Leader for success in the future

We need one strong leader instead of what we currently have running our international wrestling program.

Dan Gable is the man for the job.

The guy is US Wrestling and would be a tireless promoter. Zeke is doing a good job but one solid guy at the top, a wrestling guy, would take a lot of the day to day from his plate and push the program higher.

It would help both womens and greco programs as well with one person(or Czar) to answer to. One guy with the ultimate say-so who is a proven winner would help our programs a lot. Gable is not afraid to hire and boost good talent no matter where it comes from. He command respect. Coaches listen to him and many more would get involved if he were in charge.

Put Dan Gable in charge of the US International effort and watch it be more successful.

Only way to really break through is to have the US emphasize Freestyle.
If not scrapping Folkstyle completely at least make significant modifications so FS instincts can be learned from the beginning.

I don't see this happening, but maybe only Gable has the stature to make this happen.

    Great timing for this recommendation.

Indeed, the Zeke led team was definitely a big let down this year.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not at all happy with a team medal that was within striking distance of a gold.

Gable's made it pretty clear in numerous print and video interviews that he won't be leaving Iowa. Now, if USA Wrestling wants to relocate to Iowa City then you might have your wish.

One other point is that none of the Freestyle guys train full-time at the OTC. Who's to say that Zeke couldn't have been the difference between a third place team finish and a first place team finish?

ODH has it right. Unless this country revises its rules at the kids, high school and collegiate levels to make them more "international friendly," I don't think there's much that Gable, Smith, Douglas or anyone else can do to unseat the likes of Russia.

I am not sure who gets credit for the US team's performance. It is unclear how much Zeke ro any other head coach can do.
However, I don't think we should get too full of ourselves for the BRonze medal. US had a good performancewhile the Russians and Azeris did not.
If we want to be competing for the Gold year in and year out (well maybe the best we can hope is to compete for the silver) we need to move towards Freestyle.

Personally, I support this. As a fan, nothing means more to me than having a US guy win an international gold. It confirms what I believe in my heart, that some of the geatest wresters in the world are competing at the NCAAs and we are one of the strongest wrestling nations in the world.

I can't stand seeing a mediocre performance by our top guys.

I am not advocating Zeke Jones be replaced. I am advocating Dan Gable as the US Wrestling Czar - the one man in charge with overall say in all matters relating to International wrestling for the US. I bet we would see our guys showing up at a lot more international meets in all styles. A lot of our younger guys getting pushed for more experience in international meets. More international meets held in the US and a much more friendly wrestling atmosphere across the globe for the US, especially in our own hemisphere.
Zeke is doing fine but we need one guy at the top who is a no holds barred Wrestling guy who can manage and inspire and is not afraid to get the job done, no matter what it takes. At the same time he has to be a guy who can push and perform on the international stage, one who has the credentials to get other nations to listen and take us seriously.

    Dan Gable is that man.
