and they like
the rules. So they should change them because we don't like them?
Is it really that huge in the rest of the world?
Besides Iran and the Caucus region of former Soviet Union, is it "hugely" popular in any other countries?
I would bet the folkstyle wrestling in the US has a bigger following than wrestling in any countries other than the ones I mentioned (maybe Turkey or Mongolia?)

I have to agree with this, but maybe us US fans are so focused on the repecharge is becasue our guys lose so often in the championship round and we feel cheated to not see them get a chance to come back for a bronze.

It's just silly that someone could very easily be the worst wrestler in the world(for the sake of the argument, me) I draw Kudukhov in the first round. He pins me in 4 seconds. Because I drew the worlds best and he makes the finals, I get to wrestle again? Huh?
Yes you would get to wrestle again but you would need multiple wins to get a bronze.

Re: Fila kills itself
My personal biggest issue is with greco. I think the upset-friendly rules make it hard for superstars to establish themselves, and fans like superstars. What we have now is a bunch of very good wrestlers who take turns beating each other without any consistency.

Yeah, someone explain to me the how the greco rule of me scoring in the period, so you put me ON TOP with NO incentive to score for the last 30 seconds makes the sport more exciting, or less boring in any way, shape or form? That has to be the most ridiculous scoring system I've ever heard, especially for a discipline that's thought to be boring.

I think you're mistaken, wrestling can't be popular in Iran, I did hear it's hugely popular in Denmark though.
After all Denmark gets the world championships whereas Iran wont.

By "clinch" I'm including the ball grab. In Canada we still toss a coin (I guess we trust our officials more). The freestyle leg clinch, the greco par terre clinch, and everything that goes with it are silly. Endless overtime (like NHL hockey) is the way to go, but I understand why that won't work in the current format. I remember when they had the old, chest-to-chest clinch people were complaining "we're not wrestling greco! We want a freestyle clinch involving legs!" Oops.
