Default 2012 World Championships Discussion: Greco 55/66/96 KG

Brackets for the first day are out.

    55
Bayramov looks like the favorite to come out of the top quarter. Peter Modos is another guy that at least I've heard of in that section

Mango is in the next quarter, and his draw honestly doesn't look that bad. He has the wrestler from Kyrgyzstan in the first round. He's got a possible match up with the Cuban in round 2, but honestly I don't know anyone here other than Mango

Karakas and Haapamaki are here in this section.

Last quarter is rough. Mankiev, Amoyan, and Sourian's replacement are all down here.

    66
Much as I hate to say it, don't know anyone in the top quarter here at 66 either.

Rahimov is here in the second quarter, only guy that I know here.

This is the quarter of death here. Olympic Gold Medalist Guenot, and Olympic Silver Medalist Begaliev are both here in this quarter. Returning World Champion Vachadze is here. Lester is here as well. He has the Serbian wrestler in the first round. Assuming he wins his first two he'd see Vachadze.

Lorincz, Tskhadaia, and Vardanyan are down here.

    96
Totrov and Rezaei are here in the top quarter

Honestly don't know anyone here, the Georgian and the Cuban are in this section

Ruiz and Lidberg are here matched up on one another in the first round, Mirko Englich is in this quarter as well

    Kiss and Gabadadze are here.

I'll be teaching all day tomorrow, but for those wanting to follow the action both TheMat, and Flo should have audio for the early rounds. Then ESPN3 will have the finals and bronze medal matches.

Matches to watch early on: Mankiev/Amoyran (both very entertaining guys) and Vachadze/Lester. Both also big matchups for the fantasy league!

as I said in another thread, Hajipour and Rezaei won't wrestle tomorrow,

Abdevali has a good draw in 66kg, to me he is the top favorite for the gold in this category but I think currently the mentality of the whole team is destroyed. so I doubt he can do anything special tomorrow, first AliAkbari/B.Ghorbani, second Sourian and now this one !!! I really feel sorry for coach Banna. all he built is destroyed now.

in 55kg, Mango has a very tough job against Kyrgyz wrestler, this guy Eraliev is really good. Hasegawa - Bayramov is an interesting match in second round. even though I have no interest for tomorrow all my interests are dead after seeing the draw.

For whatever reason as I was typing the initial post up it didn't even register to me that the Iranian's were bracketed against Israelis.

I know that Iran and Israel don't get along, but why won't the Iranians wrestle Israelis? Is it all Israelis? Just Jewish Israelis? Christian Israelis? Muslims? I'm not really trying to start a political debate so feel free to PM me with your answer if you would like.

well, It's not about religion at all. doesn't matter Jewish, Muslim or Christian. (Jews even living in Iran)
the motto is "Iran doesn't recognize Israel, and Iranian athletes don't face Israeli athletes to sympathise with the suffering of the people of Palestine"

but at the end this is just a show from Iranian government, that doesn't care about its own people, this rule hurts Iranian athletes, and no one else. 30 years ago they thought this is a good show for impressing some low level people in Muslim counties. (they dreamt to lead Islamic world at that time) because these kind of people hate Israel.

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't sure if it was a stance that the wrestlers took or that the government took.

As for the two Iranians that will end up withdrawing what is their track record with international competitions? Are they serious medal contenders?
