Sanderson wrestled for real without all the media attention. He doesn't like it and never has. Bet he wishes he could just go out and wrestle without all the hoopla, just him and an opponent. Funny for a guy who is now a head coach and has to deal with this aspect every day at Penn State, isn't it?
As for the two coaches who were there, Bobby & Cody. Bobby is one of our finest technical coaches and Cody has to be learning from his experience and exposure to him. Looks like maybe we are raising a new generation of International coaching and Cody is pushing to be one of the top guys. Can't go wrong with Cael & Varner - hard to look bad with them.
Seven years away and he picks a tournement where things are relatively quiet and wins it. With Bobby in his corner shortcomings and weaknesses are seen and can be addressed. You know Bobby will see and help him work on it.
As an aside, is there anyone else in USA Wrestling with as bright a smile as Bobby Douglas? The whole room lights up and seems more cheeerful when he smiles. Completely changes his character - do more of it Bobby.
I see one post critical of the level of competition at the tournament.
I think you're overreacting, just a little bit.

What Hubbard said. I think the 2004 Sanderson is better than anyone in the world at 84 today and if he reaches that level again he's the gold medal favorite.
As wrestling fans, we want to see best vs best. Wish Sanderson had wrestled Aldatov. I'm not busting on him at all, just wondering why he would chose not to test himself against the toughest guys there are. BH presents a possible reason.
Hubbard, how do you see Sanderson vs Aldatov or Sokhiev going down?
I don't find 84 very strong, Spin. I see him beating them both.
On paper any ways.
Does anyone know why Sanderson and Varner were our only freestyle guys to wrestle in any international tournament? Or was there an earlier one that I missed that the rest of the team wrestled in?
