Thanks guys! Everyone's posts will help when I'm searching for matches to watch once they're posted.
What weights do you all think the US has the best chance of beating Russia's best?
I think Cael Sanderson is better than any of the Russians if he is in top shape. Varner has a shot as well, but he'll have to wrestle at his absolute best. I think all Russia's 66 kg guys are beatable, but I don't know if Teyon Ware is good enough to be the one to do it.
Yeah i agree I think cael could beat the russian 84s if hes in shape, I think varner will struggle with gatsalov and muradov, ware has a shot with the 66kg wrestlers. I'd be very suprised if an american medals at worlds this year, unless its sanderson and possibly dlagnev.
So Burroughs won't medal?
i dont think so, if tsargush goes, burroughs wont even touch his legs, or mahachs for that matter, he might beat some dent guys but i dont see him beating CUB IRI AZE BLR or UZB(assuming its tigiev)
The Cuban hasn't wrestled as well recently - Marable didn't even make WTT finals and he beat him at Pan Ams. Tigiev hasn't been competing for a while, I don't think you can rely on him to compete since he was last seen up at 84kg right? The Hungarian and Armenian have been competing better than Belarus recently, but I think that Burroughs could pull an upset over any of those guys. I agree that he doesn't come close to Tsargush or Iran/Aze, but I can see him sneaking a medal with a good draw - his rate of improvement at this point is off the charts.
I really don't agree with gbdaz that it will be "very" surprising if US wins a single medal. I think they're more likely to win two or three than zero (this is a better team than last year). Assuming Sanderson sharpens up between WTT and Worlds (no reason to believe he won't) then he will be a favorite to medal at a deep weight without any perennial standouts. Dlagnev has shown he can do it before and after the top two the heavyweight class has a serious drop off, so the bronzes are up for grabs. Varner is not at the level of Muradov/Gatsalov of yesteryear but those guys haven't looked nearly as sharp recently. I'd still favor them or whoever wins Russian Nationals (unless Akhmedov or Aliev pulls the upset) and I'd favor Gazyumov - however, the other tough 96kg wrestlers aren't a level above Varner IMO, Gogshelidze is getting old, he won his world title about a decade ago. Yazdani seems very inconsistent but when hitting on all cylinders I'd favor him over Varner. Still, he's very capable of medaling depending on the draw and who is on that day. Ware, Bunch, Burroughs are unlikely to medal but people with lesser chances on paper medal all the time - all three guys have styles conducive to freestyle.
As for varner, although i am really impressed with him and rate him, I can in no way see him beating gatsalov, muradov, tigiev, gazyumov, yazdani or gogshelidze, he would be overpowered by all, like ketoev did and ebrahimi did pretty comfortably.
