Thread: Baku Olympics 2016

    Default Baku Olympics 2016

The other day I was curious about Baku, so I went to Google Maps and found this:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=baku+azerbaijan&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wl
Nothing! It pointed to the general area, but nothing was labeled for the entire region. Mapquest was better: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...ory=&city=baku

I was shocked to find that Google maps had NOTHING for the entire region.

Wikipedia says that Baku is a contestant for the 2016 Olympics. Just wondering what the wrestlers and others who have been there think of the possibility.

Wikipedia says that there is no state religion but 90% of the country is Muslim (mostly Shia). How would this affect the wrestling? Would I be able to watch if I went?

I'm hoping that 2016 is in Chicago of course, but curious what others think.

I'm hoping that Chicago will host wrestling worlds sometime soon to prove our worthiness for the Olympics! How cool would that be?

AND we wouldn't have to worry about whether you and I would be allowed watch.

If not Chicago, it might be cool to have it in that region. It would be good for the world to have the spotlight on their culture. Have you watched any of the video from the last few days? The music was interesting. It reminded me of the Greco film we watched when we were in Athens. We wandered into a storefront folk museum. It was a few stories high and mostly regional costume and some funky puppet displays, but in the basement they had a special sports exhibit because of the Olympics. We watched a lot of film of Greco wrestling in the country - outdoors of course, in the grass. The music at the events reminded me of the music in the Baku videos.
In Athens we walked around the Plaka during our free time - one night we walked though a narrow brick alley and found a bunch of college age kids with musical instruments sitting on the ground playing traditional songs for the passers-by.

If you switch it to satellite view, its a pretty good image of the area.

Wow-hadn't even thought of that. Are there women (besides the wrestlers) watching Worlds?

I didn't see any, but it was hard to tell.

We could always break out the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" beards and go incognito.

And what about the women's wrestling? Maybe they aren't so strict. Hopefully the male coaches will be able to be there. Now I'm anxious to see that.

Yeah, Schlottke, that view is cool. It just weirded me out that Google didn't even have the name of the capital city. Or even a comment to say "this page or region under construction", just nothing like it's a big desert.
