On Nov. 7th(---coincides with the Soviet Revolution in 1917), and Nov. 8th, Russia will be hosting Russia vs. the World duals(Nov. 7th) and on Nov. 8th, the 2008 CSKA Cup. Will there be video of this event??? Which wrestlers for Russia and the other countries will be participating??? It will be in Moscow, correct??? ---If it is, then hopefully, it will be on Moscow TV. Hopefully, Mr. Suleyman Karimov can arrange for Moscow TV to show it, and video made available. That would be great!!!! Akzent, any word from Moscow yet??? Henry R. Angelilli |

On Nov 8, the “absolute championship” will be held. There isn't any info in which format it will be – an open class only or (as in 2003) two weight classes (96, 120) and then a final of the 2 champions. According to the plan of the organizers, 6 teams will participate at the CSKA Cup: CSKA (Russia) Ex-Soviet countries select Europe select Asia select USA Cuba The format will be as of World Cup: 2 groups of 3 teams; then duals for the 3rd and 1st place. A week ago the Russian federation announced the CSKA line-up 55 Jamal Otarsultanov 60 Adam Batirov 66 Zaur Botaev 74 Denis Tsargush (Murtazaliev is injured) 84 Albert Saritov (Sajidov announced his retirement few days back; also Adam Saitiev retired, though he hasn't announced this) 96 Khajimurad Gatsalov 120 Bilal Makhov Obviously, they intentionally selected wrestlers who were 2nd or 3rd ranked in Russia before the Olympics. Russian 2008 Olympians are not expected to participate. The organizers have extreme problems to form the team “Europe”. It was intended to consist of Beijing medalists. But... The Georgians refused to show up in Russia (for political reasons). The Ukrainians Fedorishin and Danko will not be there (don't know why). Rumors say also Ramazan Shahin wouldn't participate. Only the 2 Bulgarians (55 Velikov and 74 Terziev) accepted. That is why the organizers are going to put in “Europe” any wrestler available, for instance Kiss of Hungary at 96 and Kara of Turkey at 120. In Russian sources, nothing is said about the other 4 teams. Last edited by akzent; 11-01-2008 at 06:47 AM. | |

The event started yesterday with a scandal between Fila and the Russian federation. Fila announced the best wrestlers of 2008 FS – Vasili Fedorishin GR – Rovshan Bairamov FW – Stanka Zlateva Criteria stated in: http://wrestling.teamusa.org/news/article/7638 At the same time, the organizers in Moscow announced FS – Buvaisar Saitiev GR – Aslanbek Hushtov FW – Saori Yoshida No agreement could be reached and Fila withdrew from the event saying it should be regarded as an non-official, non-international (non-Fila) thing. *** Teams participating: Pool A: CSKA, Asia, Iran Pool B: Europe, Russia, CIS Initially, only CSKA, Asia, Europe and CIS were intended to participated. Other 2 teams (USA, Cuba) the Russian federation intended to have at the CSKA Cup refused to participate and the organizers substituted them with Iran and a second Russian team. |

I have no idea why the US did not but I think a lot of good wrestlers knew that the tourney would turn into a glorification event for the Russian federation. That must be the reason why several Olympic medalists refused to participate. Silver medalist Abdusalamov refused a day before the tourney. Taimazov is wrestling at the Soslan Andiev tourney which coincides with the CSKA cup and the “absolute” championships. On the web pages of the tourney, there is more or less detailed information about all 4 duals of the Russian team and nothing about the other teams though the Cup has been stylized as an “intercontinental” one. |

Fedorishin- how can a non-olympic champion be named "best wrestler"? Especially when the guy who beat him in the finals, Batriov, might be the best active wrestler on earth? BTW my vote for last season's best wrestler would be either Muradov (96kg Russia) or Saitiev. |
