Default Top 10 matches, 2009-2010 season

Over the next few days, I plan to go through the "good matches" thread on this board and pick out my top ten freestyle matches for the 2009-10 season. All men's freestyle matches from after the 2009 world championships to the end of the 2010 championships qualify. I've included a few that I think a lot of people have seen on the poll, but I have some others in mind as well.

Currently I'm looking for ideas before I finalize my selection. If you have any matches to recommend that are not yet posted, please add them to the good matches section.

This thread would be really cool if you had links to each of those matches in it. I'll try and go through the good matches thread and watch/rewatch them.

When I finalize my "top ten" I'll definitely link to each match, but I don't have time to do it right now.

I especially need to go through the jr. world championships, I remember that pretty much every match was a barnburner but I need to pick out the few best ones.

#5 is a wide open throwing contest between Andrey Valiyev of Russia and Ibrahim Bolukbasi of Turkey in the 84 kg jr world finals. This match also shows great par terre wrestling.

#4 features a dual meet between Russia and the USA. The first match, a 55 kg bout between Mashezov and Sam Hazewinkel, features some of the greatest 5 pt throws you well ever see!

#3 is the 66 kg world semifinal between Olympic bronze medallist Kumar Sushil from India and European Champion Jabril Hasaynov from Azerbayjan. Great contrast in styles here between the pure power and speed of the Azeri, vs the technical brilliance and balance of the Indian.

#2 is the 84 kg world finals between the defending champ Zarbuk Sokhiev of Uzbekistan, and the Mikhail Ganev of Bulgaria. Not often you see a comeback at this level of wrestling, especially against an accomplished defensive wrestler like Sokhiev, but the underdog Ganev pulls it off.

#1 is the 60 kg world finals between then 2x world champ Besik Khudukov of Russia (arguably the best pound for pound in the world) and multiple world medallsit Vasil Fedorishin of the Ukraine. Fedorishin goes in with a great game plan to tie up the Russian and slow him down. It's a great, tense match throughout but the final clinch counter is probably the single greatest move I've ever seen in wrestling, and rockets this match up to #1 on the list. What a finish!

Ok, here they are: my top 10 freestyle matches of the 2009-2010 season.

#10 is the second match of the 84 kg US world team trials between world silver medallist Jake Herbert and Keith Gavin. A surprising Gavin won the first match and takes a lead in this second one, forcing Herbert to turn it up.

#9 is the 120 kg world championship final between then 2x world champion Bilyal Makhov and 2x world, 2x Olympic champ Artur Taymazov. These two physical specimens don't but up a big score, but it's not often you see two such accomplished wrestlers compete against each other. I'd been hoping to see this one forever.

#8 is the 55 kg Yarygin semifinal between defending world champ Yang IL from Korea and future world champ Victor Lebedev from Russia. A great display of pure physical power. This one is particularly interesting because the North Korean did not compete in this year's worlds.

#7 is the Russian Nationals semifinal between defending world champ Denis Tsargush and Kamal Malikov. Tsargush usually wrestles a calm, defensive style. In this one, his opponent forces him to dig deep and open up.

#6 is the 55 kg wr. world finals between Vlademir Khinechagvilli of Georgia and Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbayjan. A wild, scramble filled match. The 17 year old Asgarov went on to place 2nd at the Sr. World championships!
