Sweet! I got 2/3 gold medallists predicted correctly, with 3/4 medallists correct at 55 kg and 2/4 correct at 96. Stupid Khustov. Video anywhere?

JensenS, I've found the FILA site to be notoriously inaccurate with their scores.

They appear to be extra bad today. Lot of periods that were 0-0 (and there were quite a few of them) I filled in as 1-0 in favor of the guy who won.

Nailed Soryan and Vachadze today too (although if you pay attention like I know you do these two shouldn't have been particularly difficult). I considered picking Lidberg at 96 just on the off chance that Khustov would choke for a second year in a row but the Bulgarian would have done me in there anyway.

Agreed JensenS, Sourian especially was an obvious pick.
55 kg finals (incomplete.) I love how easy Sourian makes it look with is gut wrench. I'd love to know how the Korean put up 3 on him.

96 kg finals. The right guy won, but the scoring in the first period is still messed up.

Some big throws in an early match from Khustov.

On another note, I think Albiev won the Russian nationals at 66... did he beat Vachadze, or did the newly crowned world champ not compete?

After being separated for some time without connection or insight into the 2010 World Championships I was finally able to catch up with everything that has happened and the results so far. This first day was a very good day for Russia. Ambako Vachadze continues to impress and dominate the field. He performed outstandingly in these World Championships. He certainly came a long way from last year when he got bronze. He dominated everyone he wrestled and proved that he is one of the best and he is to be reckoned with to come in the future. I am somewhat dissapointed with Nazir Mankiev and Aslanbek Khustov. I expected Nazir to at least make it into the finals and even win it all, but I guess he just couldn't get it, but it's certainly better than last year when there was nothing for 55KG. Nazir certainly will continue to grow and get better and win more, so we'll see. Just like Khustov, Nazir should be beating these guys, but I still continue to have faith in him.

I am very dissapointed in Khustov still. Ever since Beijing in '08, he has leveled down a bit and kind of just lingered there in that bronze medal area. He got bronze last year and bronze again because of close semi-matches lossess. I don't what is going on with Khustov, whether he is just choking or not, but he needs to get it together, and start dominating again like he did in Beijing. I don't see how you go from that to this. Obvioulsy, he needs to get back on track because he is one of my favorite Greco-Roman wrestlers of now. he is losing to guys he should be dominating, but I still continue to have faith in him.

Overall, Russia did very well today medaling in all 3 weight classes! Ambako Vachadze with gold at 66KG, Nazir Mankiev with bronze at 55KG, and Aslanbek Khustov with bronze at 96KG. We certainly have the lead after the first day!
