Default Russians Request "English Wrestling" Demonstration

Pretty cool blog entry here from Ian McCutcheon

Bayar Tsyrenov was particularly interested in folk style, and asked for a scoring breakdown. After taking 5th at Russian Nationals as a 23 year old, I guess he?s looking for new challenges. We went over what kind of correlated to freestyle, 2 points instead of 1 for a takedown, 2 or 3 for nearfall depending on how long the hold is, stalling instead of passivity. He had also heard that you get one point for getting out, and two points for switching places (that one took some hand motions on both sides to communicate). ?When does the ref let you up?? he asked. ?Never. Get yourself up.? When I told him that, his eyes got bigger than dinner plates. He even started laughing at such a ridiculous notion. ?Wow, folkstyle very hard. But I really like to try.? I don?t think he was all that serious about it, but I?m sure there is a program or two that would take a chance on a Russian medalist. The immortal John Smith would be tough to beat in a recruiting battle, (they love him over here), but don?t worry Coach Ryan, I told him Ohio is beautiful during wrestling season.

Thanks for the plug. English wrestling is my new favorite phrase. That part of the trip was really hilarious. The guys were much more interested in watching college and high school folkstyle matches than all of the matches we filmed from the tournament. Very curious as to how our version of the sport worked. Everybody wanted to see video of John Smith, but unfortunately, we didn't have any of his matches on the extra hard drive Joe brought over.

We just got to Moscow from Volgograd, and this is the first internet access we've had in days. We're having trouble uploading matches, so it may be 3 or 4 days before everything from the tournament goes up (Joe and I fly back Wednesday). The whole week was a very cool experience, especially getting to stay with a team rather than just by ourselves in a hotel. Hopefully our coverage does the tournament justice.

We showed them one scramble from Pennsylvania State Finals where Steve Spearman and Tyler Buckman roll across their backs about 40 times before Spearman finally scores a takedown. “No points, no points, no points” we narrated as they rolled around. “ZERO POINTS?!?! ZERO POINTS?!?!” the whole room screamed, horrified at the thought. “How?!” Control is the game boys, it’s a different animal.
    ?

That's how I feel watching folkstyle too.

Good deal. I'll be looking forward to the matches going up.
