Was Ritter the guy that Saitiev abused in the Athens Finals in 04?

No that was Laliev. Ritter was the one he beat in the 05' finals.

Thanks, knew Ritter was previously connected to him some how.

There were times when Saitiev could win a tournament like this even at 84 kg.

I believe Saitiev was once a European champ at 84kg.

Buvaisar and Ritter have quite a history. They were born in one and the same year 1975 and they began to wrestle internationally in the early 90s and as seniors ? in the mid 90s.

They met first at the 1996 euros where Saitiev became the champ. He pinned Ritter. I scanned some pics of the throw & the pin.

At the 1997 worlds Saitiev beat Ritter 6:0.
At the 2001 euros he beat him 8:0 in the semis. Saitiev placed 1st, Ritter was 3rd.

In 2002 and 2003, Ritter was european champ (victories over Gaidarov, Isagadjiev, Leipold). Saitiev didn't wrestle at these euros.

They met again at the 2004 Olympics. At the beginning Ritter had Saitiev nearly on his back in cradle. Saitiev escaped and won the match 8:2. After the match Saitiev said:
    > It was the first time when somebody had him in cradle.
    > It was the first time Ritter could score against him. He added that they wrestled each other about 7 times and Ritter could never score any single point. He said also (in quite ironic or even sarcastic way) how happy he (Saitiev) was that Ritter could score any points after all.
    > If Ritter were a good wrestler, he shouldn't have let an opponent escape from the cradle.

At the 2005 worlds Saitiev beat Ritter 8:2 in the final.

In 2006, Ritter went up to 84 and at the 2007 euros he placed 3rd in this weight division. Notice that Ritter has much longer experience at 84. He began to wrestle in this division 3 or 4 years earlier and he wrestled at 84 at many tournaments and in the German league. In that early period he went down to 74 only when wrestling at euros and worlds.

This last weekend in Poland, at 84 kg, Ritter beat Saitiev 1:0, 1:1.
