Mystery riddle: Who is the US guy? Help: The photo shows a match at the 2001 Takhti tournament. Several years later both wrestlers medaled at one and the same world championships. The US wrestler did it better than the Iranian.

Yazdani won

At the 2001 Takhti Cup, at 63 kg, Zadick beat Bazri twice. In the prelims he beat him 6:5. Later he lost a match. Both wrestled back and faced each other again in the bronze-medal match. Zadick won 5:4.

Mazandaran is a province in northern Iran:

Like Dagestan, Mazandaran lies at the Caspian Sea: Dagestan is at the sea's western coast; Mazandaran at its southern coast.

Mazandaran is not just a province in the administrative division of Iran, but also a great wrestling province. In the last two years, more than the half of the world team members were from Mazandaran.
Five wrestlers in the 2005 world team: 55 Dadashi, 60 Mohammadi, 66 Vahedi, 74 Hajizadeh, 96 Ganji.
Four wrestlers in the 2006 world team: 55 Dadashi, 60 Mohammadi, 74 Bazri, 84 Yazdani.

Here they come from (I highlighted the capital and the towns)

The lightweights Dadashi and Mohammadi come from the capital Sari.
Bazri is from Behshahr.
Yazdani comes from Joybar.

Great photos and info. What beautiful vistas, on one hand a hard life full of denial, on the other beauty surrounds you! I wonder if there's a lesson there? Thanks for the post Akzent ! You are IMHO the best poster on this site. Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings!

On the first page, I updated the map of Tsumada – the wrestling district in Daghestan. In pink, I marked a fourth village – Hushtada.

This is the village of the 1999 world and 2000 Olympic champ Said Murtazaliev (97 kg):

Said working on Bairamukov in the 2000 Olympic final

Said stretching Tosoev at the 2000 games

Well he is born in Mahachkala, not in the village, but his “clan” is native of that village and many of Said's kinsmen are still living there.

This tape is a part of a 50-minutes German documentary film (1996) about life and customs in Hushtada. The first 2 minutes show traditional sporting games at a wedding – belt-wrestling and stone discus throwing.
