Thread: Karelin Wikipedia

    Default Karelin Wikipedia

I was surfing through Wikipedia and came across Karelin's page. Then after going down a couple of lines I noticed it said he is nicknamed "the Russian Dan Gable". Now Gable was obviously the man but his acheivments were not even remotely close to Karelin's. Is this due to him losing his finals match?

Wikipedia's not the most reliable source, I've only EVER heard Karelin called "The Russian Bear."

I've heard Karelin referred to as "the Siberian Tiger" and "the Experiment" (for his freakish musculature and seemingly superhuman strength")... but never "the Russian Dan Gable."

There are a couple ways of looking at this. One would be, that Karelin and Gable are two prime examples of wrestling excellence for their counties. Or, that both were so intense in their pursuit of excellence on the mat, with a fierce, all-out-attacking, dominating wrestling style. Of course, another possibility would be, the two legends who lost epic matches that concluded a chapter of their careers. (In other words, Gardner was Karelin's Owings.)

Remember -- Wikipedia is NOT perfect... the write-ups are usually written by various individuals, taking information from various sources... and oftentimes not experts in te given subject matter. I've found errors in the Wiki's of other legendary wrestlers...

I am aware of wikipedia's reliability but I had never heard of him called this and was wondering if any of you guys heard him called that before.

Maybe Dan Gable edited Wikipedia that way. Either that or Sesker did it.

It is no diminishment of Karelin's accomplishments to call him the Russian Dan Gable. The coiner of this phrase evidently meant it to signify "the best".
