Thread: Baumgartner

    Two questions on Bruce Baumgartner:

    1) Does anyone know who was the last American to defeat him?

    2) Anyone know where to find videos of any of his matches with American rival Tom Erikson?

From 1981 until 1997 he did not lose to any Americans. He started the streak after a loss to Erland Van Lidth de Juede (former MIT heavyweight). I don't know who ended his streak in 1997 or if he just retired.

I know he just walked away after the last Olympics -Bruce wrestled at Indiana State -one of the first programs to go. Rod Chamberlain holds the single season record for falls at IU and he's on Facebook -he'd probably know as he graduated from IU in 81.

Thanks. The last American defeat Baumgartner suffered would have had to have been around 81 or 82. I've heard people mention it was possibly Ron Carlisle or maybe Gary Albright. Hadn't heard about Erland Van Lidth de Juede though. Is that definite?

My information is second hand, so I would not call it definite.
It was in an email from an alumni group, which I''ll copy below:

... Baumgartner was a four-time Olympic medalist starting in 1984. From 1981, Baumgartner did not lose to an American wrestler until his retirement from competition in 1997, a span of 17 years.

Several years ago I was watching the Iowa v. Iowa State match on television. Bruce Baumgartner was one of the commentators. During a break, Dan Gable asked Baumgartner about his victory streak. I nearly dropped my drink when Baumgartner replied, “Yeah, after I lost to Erland Van Lithe De Jeude out of MIT, I didn’t lose again until 1997.”

I know he wrestled for Fran McCann at ISU and went from above average to untouchable -give him a shout (Bruce ) I believe he is still at Edinboro.

Bruce is still the Athletic Director at Edinboro and has been since he retired from coaching in the late 1990's.

Here is the list of his accomplishments on his website: http://www.brucebaumgartner.com/accomplishments.html
