I believe Kerry McCoy started as a freshman in HS, and he went on to win two NCAA heavyweight titles, and wrestled for the US in two Olympics.

I heard he started took a wrestling course as a university student, got hooked, joined the varsity team and worked his way up from there. Don't think he wrestled in high school. Not sure how many years he had wrestled when he made the Olympic team in 1996. He was won a bunch of greco national titles and at least one freestyle one (finished top 3 many times).

Colbie is indeed amazing, he was (is) incredibly strong and just hammered on people from the top position.

I've heard it said that Mark Schultz started wrestling late as well, and he won the Olympics and 2 world titles. Dunno how late though.

I remember hearing that Mo Lawal started as a sophomore in HS, he was an NCAA DII champ and DI All-Amercian. He also made multiple world teams.
Alexander Medved, often considered the greatest Heavyweigth ever, started wrestling at 19 or 20.

Wow, very interesting. Is that 110% true mate? And roughly how old would of Lawal been?

One of the most extreme "late starters" from the distant past is Jack Riley, Northwestern University's first two-time NCAA champ (75 years before Jake Herbert). Riley was a star football player for the Wildcats who was recruited to join the wrestling team his JUNIOR year of college, and, despite being new to wrestling, won the 1931 NCAA heavyweight title. Proving that was no fluke, he claimed a 2d NCAA title the following year.

Then, a few months later, he won the silver medal at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Now, things were much different back then -- fewer competitors, and many of them were like Riley, relatively newbies. But... maybe there's inspiration there.
