allegedly, at the 2005 worlds, romero was photographed receiving a package from someone in the georgian federation prior to the finals match. the georgian wrestler went on to win the tournament at that weightclass. no one ever knew what the package contained, nevertheless the cubans suspended romero for a while.

yoel served his suspension. not too long a go, the cubans reinstated him and went on a wrestling tour in europe . while in europe, romero jumped ship and did not return to cuba with the team.

i heard this from wrestlers who went to cuba to train prior this year's pan ams.

There were rumors that the same happened at the 2000 Olympics. The final vs. Saitiev. The way Saitiev pinned Romero was beautiful. (As in) Theatre.

Not a rumor! This happened after the German Grand Prix in Leipzig, June 23, where Romero placed first. Romero disappeared and the Cuban team departed without him and without telling anybody about that. Obviously nobody in Germany knew that Romero remained there, also the police and the emigration officials not. The first official news came two weeks after the tournament, on July 10. All German newspapers and also the journal ?Spiegel? wrote about him. Romero said that he stood 2 weeks in the home of his brother (he is a boxer) in a town near Berlin who had emigrated in Germany several years ago. Obviously Romero asked the officials of the German federation whether it was possible to wrestle for Germany. The reason why I suppose he asked about is the fact that an official said for a Berlin TV that Romero should wait and he would be allowed (according to the fila constitution) to represent Germany 2 years after his last participation for Cuba at a championship.

What happened in Germany forced Cuba ruler Mr. Raul Castro to take preventive measures during the PanAms this week in order not to lose any other athletes abroad. The Cuban athletes were not allowed to attend the closing ceremony of the Games. Immediately after the last sportive events finished, they had to fly back to Cuba.

the cuban wrestlers have a really crappy situation. i hear most training facilities in camaguey are shipping containers (those used in shipping vessels) that are welded together to make a 'wrestling room'. imagine the heat in those things!

their post work out recovery/meal is a cup of ice. they can either ice their aching muscles with it, or suck on it to rehydrate. i hear most people do both.

also, the wrestlers need to be on the national team to get a salary, so training is somewhat hostile, with wrestlers not wanting to share their tecniques , etc.

wrestlers that have trained in cuba use it as motivation. foreign coaches use cuba as a reminder of how much worse things could be. even the wrestling room in colorado springs has pictures of the training center in cuba.

And yet Cubans are some of the best wrestlers in the World and whooped American butts. They must be doing something right.

Look, Olympic wrestlers are not supposed to live in luxury. Even in Russia wrestlers are very poor until they make at least top 3 on the Russian team.

Romero is getting up there in age and he gave Cuba his best years. Its not like he is running away in his prime.

So winning is worth the wrestlers living in sub-human conditions?
