USA Wrestling is sad to report that one of the American wrestlers competing in the Veterans World Championships in Kouvola, Finland today has passed away.

Michael Cain of Summerfield, Fla., 52, collapsed during his opening round match of the tournament against Harri Niemi of Finland. Cain received immediate medical assistance, but those providing care could not revive him.

Cain was competing at 130 kg/286 lbs. in Div. D (51-55 years old). There were three athletes in his weight class and FILA has awarded a bronze medal to him, which is being accepted by his teammates.

His family has been notified. USA Wrestling expresses its sincere condolences to the friends and family of Michael Cain.

Cain competed this year at the Beach National Championships in Rochester, N.Y., winning the Veterans title. He was a Veterans Nationals freestyle champion in 2008 and also a member of the 2008 U.S. Veterans World team.

I am a personal friend and coached with Mike. It is heart breaking to hear that he is gone. Mike was a dreamer and he would stop at nothing to obtain his dreams. He left behind his wife and a young son. Please keep them in your prayers and God bless you all. Mike is a man that was always about giving. He started the South Lake Wrestling program from scratch and I went to college with Mike where I learned just how much he loved those around him. Words can't describe his heart!!!

I had an opportunity to meet Mike this year in Rochester. He was so excited to go to the worlds. Although I only met him I could tell he was a good guy with heart. It is sad to hear this and I feel for his family. You will be missed big guy.
