Yes, Freestyle will help your folkstyle. It will help your takedowns and help you have a solid base. As for folkstyle helping freestyle.. I dont know.

Alot more is legal in freestyle that will get you DQ'ed in folkstyle. You can choke on a gator roll and lock hands on top. Also, there isn't really such thing as an illegal slam; you can pretty much suplex your opponent straight backwards over your head and be rewarded points rather than being DQ'ed like you would in folkstyle. Points are alot different. There are no points rewarded for an escape and a normal 2 point takedown is only worth 1 point. You either need to take your opponent down directly to his back or flip him if you want multiple (3-5) points. In freestyle, there are 3-2 minute periods but you win by winning 2 of those periods, not by having more points at the end of the match. The score can be 5-0 you, 1-2 him, 2-3 him meaning that the overall score was 8-5 you but you still lose because he won two periods. You just have to work on rolls like gator rolls and gut wrenches to get 2 points and learn some good throws like judo arm throws and lat drops to get the big points.

mhsnoballs? are you talking about me? I'm a national freestyle and greco roman champion and undefeated in both. In addition, me and my friends invented 'chairstyle' where there's a steel chair in the middle of the mat and each wrestler is awarded one free 'chair shot' for the duration of the match. So don't put me into that category.

Folkstyle can definitely help freestyle. Many reversing techniques used on the mat in folkstyle will also score points in freestyle. The two styles compliment each other and many feel more comfortable with their particular style. Degrading one style or another doesn't help wrestling or the wrestlers. While learning moves of a style other than your own might not be interesting, various offshoots of the moves can often be applied in other styles. There are many fine champions out there in all styles and learning the various moves of each can do nothing but help. The rules are made to foster fair competition and safety of the participants. The US should be proud to have its own unique style (folkstyle) and many high school and college wrestlers get really in to it. My preference is folkstyle but I am happy to learn freestyle techniques, many of which I use for both folkstyle and freestyle. At times our club does folkstyle and these technique often work in freestyle as well. In summary I believe the two styles complement each other.

i find folkstyle much sloppier then freestyle, the mistakes arent as critical where as in freestyle if you give up a 2, you are basically down 3 because it is gonna take 3 1 point take downs to take the lead, confusing i know but you have to wrestle smart with very little mistakes

So true. Take the power switch for example. Yeah, you get your 1 point reversal, but the way most people do it, you give up 2 for back exposure. And on a takedown, all the defender has to do is keep the momentum going to score 2 points. I almost lost a match like that once. As my coach always says, "Penis to the mat!"
