In theory, looking back on the idea, switching to FS and GR sounds good. But what would you say to the person who says why make the switch only for the sake of the 20 people (for each style, Men's Freestyle, Women's Freestyle, and Greco) on the USA national team who get to compete in international competition out of thousands of wrestlers that compete in high school and college?

Plus, what would you say to the person who says why make the switch when arguably folkstyle (with its emphasis on control and mat wrestling) is better than freestyle in preparing a person for MMA (which probably can pay a salary to a former high school/college wrestler) vs. the few Olympic medalists who only get that, a medal? Maybe the Olympic wrestling medalists might get endorsement deals, but I don't see that happening in the same vein as recruiting a Michael Phelps for endorsement purposes.

I would say that we would not be switching for 20 people. I would say we would have multiple international teams competing at different levels. I would say that international youth teams would come to the US to compete in major events. I would say that Fargo would be followed two weeks later by an international competition (wouldn't that be cool!) that would be just as large.

As far as MMA goes, it is about takedowns, controling your opponent on the feet and on the mat. I lot of it has to do with weight classes. You see a lot more Greco type control used at 185 and up. I would also say that while I am not ignorant to the influence of commercialization on youth sport, lets not make it the reason why kids play sport. If you want me to rattle of some stats on the odds of going pro in football I can do so. I can also get specific on the odds of becoming a lawyer or doctor vice a pro basketball player. Point is kids should not be wrestling or playing football for the primary reason of making money at it. When they dream or set goals to play at the highest levels it should be for the achievement not the financial gain. Let them get a bit older before they start warping their perspective on sport.

Certainly more than 20 people compete internationally, but I will grant you it is a small percentage compare to the total number of US of wrestlers. but when the US wins an Olympic medal it has great benefits for the sport. I think we are also seeing US wrestlers being surpassed in technique, becasue we are so isolated internationally and our youth programs do not compete with and are not coached by the best in the world.

Winning Olympic gold is also huge for wrestling fans. If every former HS wrestler was as familiar with Freestyle as they are with Folkstyle, there would be a lot more people watching wrestling in the Olympics. For "amatuer" sports, Olympics is what matter to the public. Phelps became a celebrity because of his performance at the Olympics. How often did you hear about results from the Swimming World Championshps before this year?

Finally, you bring up an interesting point with what skills transfer best to MMA. If you look at who seems to be doing the best, you could make an argument for Greco being the best style for MMA. Personally I think any type of wrestling gives you basic mat awareness to succeed in MMA and all wrestling styles also have skills that need to be unlearned to succeed in MMA.

Why make us change? Why not let folkstyle be a part in the olympics.

FILA aka the governing body of wrestling in the Olympics will not switch to our folkstyle.

You will never see freestyle or greco at the high school or collegiate level. The two reasons for this are as follows.
    1. 99% of the athletic directors either don't know enough about wrestling or don't care

    2. It will be very difficult to convince the athletic directors that the five point throws that are allowed in fs/gr would be safe.
I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

Even before the Athletic directors, the vast majority of wrestling coaches along with most wrestlers and fans will fight like crazy not to switch.
I would support a change, even though I know it will never happen.
It just drives me crazy to see our best wrestlers start with such and handicap as training full time in Folk until they finish college. I think the US is the 2nd best wrestling country in the world, but we can't prove it, but we focus on a different style than the rest of the world.

I've said this before, but a "hybrid" style of wrestling would be cool, one which combines the 7-minutes-straight grind of a folkstyle match which Americans seem to love with a scoring system similar to freestyle. Obviously FILA wouldn't change just because someone asked them to, nor would the NCAA, but I still think it's a good idea in theory.

I'm non-American but I WISH folkstyle replace FS/GR wrestling in Olympics. Folkstyle resembles REAL grappling. FS/GR is all about back exposure like gut wrench, leglace, etc which might be cool to look at but Folkstyle is closer to real grappling like controlling(riding) your opponents and such. Call me crazy but I even find folkstyle more appealing to watch. You don't see too many crazy scrambles in international styles!
