The Chicago area hosted a wrestling dual meet between a team of FILA Jr/Cadet aged Americans and Club Olympus from Dagestan Republic of Russia. The meet took place on 6/10/09 at Elmhurst College in IL.

Below are some of my photos from the meet:

Is this called "Project Torch" because of what the US did to the Russians?
    Where are our Russian posters?
Can we search out Big just for his comments on this meet?

Hell, they only won three periods!! What the hell is going on with that program? The Coach will surely be sequestered to Siberia for that performance.

Hopefully thats not the future of Russian wrestling right there. I feel embarrased. Maybe they just wanted the U.S. to feel good aout themselves.

Yeah, but those are the best wrestlers in the US either.
I believe it is just a local Illinois team.

If you're going to bring a team to the US, why not bring your "A" team? That doesn't make sense.

His little brother is the kid who wrestled in 96kg in those tournament. His name is islam. These kids are not even close to what fdagestans best wrestlrs are. U pathetic americans r sending out ur best wrestlers against these kids. U have no idea what kind of wrestlers there are ovr there.I practice in russia every summer with them. Their beats.

This guy's got a point. From my understanding USA wrestling is assembling a pretty elite team to go against these kids. Why not find some opponents closer to their skill level?

I'm pretty sure a "best of the best" team from Dagestan would have it's way with the best of Illinois (and possibly the best of the United States).

No one should be debating that the best wrestlers from a good wrestling area in Russia should be able to come the US and beat any state level all-star team. However, one would think that a group of wrestlers that came all the way over from Dagestan to represent their country would be at least decent by Dagestani standards, which I understand is among the best wrestling areas in Russia.

Illinois is a very good wrestling state, but not really in contention for the top spot. I don't follow youth wrestling so I don't know what level these guy are.

Also you have to take into consideration that the matches are in Freestyle which is not as famaliar to as Folkstyle to almost every youth wrestler.

Finally, it was an absolute shellacing by the US. The US won every match and almost every period and most period were not even close.

Remember that it's freestyle and not folkstyle, and I believe IL has won the jr duals in freestyle the last few years as well as placing very high at Fargo.

I know that the Illinois team was switched around at the last minute to try to make the match-ups more even. Some wrestlers even bumped up a couple weights. This was the original line-up: http://www.projecttorchusa.org/news/...dualjune09.htm

As far as the Russian team, I know a couple guys were some of the best junior wrestlers from that area, but in general I think it was more for the cultural exchange. A similar dual was hosted last year with a Bulgarian club team.
