No detailed reports are available. The Russian reports aren't more detailed than the only English-language report available:

It's actually based on the Russian news.

What I know from a Dagestani friend: It was a Jr. competition. Without any top wrestlers because at the same time (this weekend) the Russian Jr. nationals were held on another place in Russia.

The competition took place in the village Gerga. After one of the matches, a guy of Gerga, not only refused to shake hand with the winner from the village Utamysh, but also insulted him. This provoked the fight.

Well it may have been catalyzed by an existing ethnic conflict (or at least tension) what isn't unusual for that region. The two villages are ethnic villages. Gerga is inhabited by Dargins, Utamysh by Kumyks.

On another note: In the last 2 or 3 years, the Kumyk villages in exactly that region of Dagestan produced several good lightweight wrestlers, among them Nariman Israpilov ? 2008 jr. world champ and 2009 sr. European champ at 55 kg; Ilyas Bekbulatov ? 2007 European cadet champ and second at the 2008 jr. Europeans.

Do top (ie world medallist) wrestlers typically compete in regional competitions, or do they just wrestle the Russian Nationals and international tournament?

Typically, senior medallists don't wrestle at regional competitions but junior medallists (worlds, euros) do. Well sometimes there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, Olympic silver medallist Bakhtiar Akhmedov wrestled at the championships of Dagestan a month ago. I don't know what was the reason for that unusual step back or down. Maybe his pour performance at Yarygin tourney early this year.

Back to the topic. Meanwhile, around 100 Russian e-newspapers reported or/and commented the inter-village fight. It is interesting to view the photographs used as illustration to the texts. Since no journalist has been there, the editors are using old pictures of street fights or from FS wrestling matches, in which any dirty or tough up to cruel holds can been seen; for instance pictures of Sagid Murtazaliev who was known for his tough holds.

Or this one of Zach Roberson at Takhti'07. Well it is not Zach anymore. The news editors brushed the USA on his singlet and cut his head because it didn't appear too Daghestani.

The Iranians found a good one. The added to the report a non-manipulated picture of a real Dagestani (Marid Mutalimov) bleeding; a photo taken at the recent World Cup in Tehran.
