Cross Wrist Defense

When I was wrestling defending the cross wrist was always a huge fault of mine, now I am helping coach and one of the wrestlers is having the same problem, all I could say was clear your wrist away on the stand up but it isn't much help. Anyone have any tricks that I can pass on to defending a cross wrist or getting it free after it is taken?

depends a lot on how the wrestler is taking the wrist and what they do afterwards. is the top wrestler just getting the cross wrist for a tilt or are they trapping it for a ball and chain/ pump handle type control? clearing the wrist on the stand up, can you be a little more specific for me on what you mean by clear the wrist.
