Default Am I at a disadvantage when taking shots because of my long arms?

I've noticed that I have long arms. (they come down to just right above my knees) I know that you have to have what they call "t-rex" arms when taking shots because when you are stretched out, your opponent can sprawl more easily and then probably score. Because my arms are so long it makes it easier for my opponent to sprawl. I mean because of that, before I was tempted to reach when taking shots. Now I'm better in keeping them in. I still have a little trouble when doing the sweep though. So am I at a disadvantage or something?

It should be to your ADvantage. You can easily reach an opponents legs. It sounds to me that your problem is you need to work on snapping/pulling (for lack of better description) your arms back in after reaching for a shot. My HS coach use to stress this for us, he also had very long arms. You should at no time shoot and leave your self extended.

You need to watch videos of Cael Sanderson. He picked opponents apart at their ankles when he used his long arms to his advantage.

In brief, reach then SNAP arms back, finish and get your 2. Hope this helps.

Pinch your elbows in tight when you shoot.

Thats what "t-rex arms" means, it doesn't mean "have short arms."

Another thing to think about is adding technique where you do not need to extend yourself.

The "T-Rex Arms" are meant, like Shane said, to keep your arms close to your body. Don't over extend yourself when shooting.
