Imus will sue CBS for $40 million
CNN is reporting that supposedly Racial Slurs were not only allowed but encouraged as part of his contract to make the show more fun and controversial.
-
The report I heard on TV was that his contract required him to be irreverent and controversial. You can be both of those without being racist.

Supposedly, he said many racist things before and CBS never even reprimanded him.

Why wasn't he entitled to the money in the first place? When college or professional sports team fire their coaches, they have to pay out the remainder of the countract. Does anyone know why Imus wasn't going to get the money from the rest of his contract?

Just a guess: when a college coach is fired, it isn't because of he committed a transgression, but because his teams aren't winning and the admin. wants a change. Imus committed acts which were determined to be inappropriate and was released for cause.

Maybe that would have led him to assume that his comments about the players would be okay - but then why did he apologize?
Maybe this incident was just the last straw and CBS could no longer just look the other way.

Most contracts have clauses that indicate that termination based on certain behavior will void remainder of salary sum.

Don't you remember John Paul II, the Catholic Pope, apologizing to Muslims for some things he said? He did not apologize for saying those things. He apologized for the way they felt about what he said.
But, it is also important to note John Paul II is stil an active Pope.

It wasn't John Paul II's job to be irreverent and controversial. On the contrary, it was his job to try to bring people together. His apology helped his cause; Imus's apology softened what was supposed to be an iconoclastic personna.
