Socialistic Higher Edjucation
I was talking with my neighbor who is from Checkoslovakia and immigrated here in 1975. We discussed a socialistic approach to college education kind of like what they have in the UK. I was on board with the idea because the cost of education is so great we should have some free universities in the states along with the private institutions you would have to pay for. So for the kids or adults who apply themselves in their studies they can be rewarded for it. You would have to be able to earn your way into a free public university and in the private ones peoples parents could still just buy them an education.
Something similar to this has been around for many years in Berea, KY. I'm not sure that they are still run in this fashion, but back in the 50s and 60s, Berea College in Berea, KY, would not let their students pay their way through college. Every student had a job with the college nad would work in order to earn the right to take classes. Students would staff the physical plant, dairy, farm, various stores, and other operations needed to run the college. The farm products they raised, fruits and vegetables they raised, and products they made were sold to the residents of Berea to make enough money to pay the bills for the college. It was entirely self-supporting.
Many Americans pay their way through college. I don't know if that is what ugly was talking about though.
We all need a good edjucation.
The Ivies have move in that direction. The family pays what they can afford to pay. No more loans, just grants with no repayment requirements. If you can afford the full price, you pay the full price.
