Does he have even close the the following of Howard Stern?
Is this the first time a radio host said something derogatory towards people?
Is every other host now fired that said derogatory things?
I thought in great America people could just stop listening to him if they didn't like him.
Nice show of freedom of speech!
I agree Big, I cannot see canceling a show over something someone says once. That Doesn't mean I don't think what he said was wrong, but lets get serious, if we got fired for saying stupid stuff, everyone here would be picking up their unemployment check with Imus...
"I thought in great America people could just stop listening to him if they didn't like him."
C'mon , Big. This is the great home of Capitalism! You can say whatevver you can get away with. They didn't get rid of him until his sponsors split and it wasn't profitable to keep him. It wasn't some righteous thing, it was the money.
"All my life I have tried to pluck a thistle and plant a flower wherever the flower would grow in thought and mind." -- Abraham Lincoln
He carries a hefty NY crowd which can easily be translated into a national following. Let's face it HS isn't on 24 hours.
The downside here, Imus does have a decent heart. He's a bit Schitzo while on the air. He can rip you a new one at any given moment, but on the otherhand he's leverage his on air position to raise millions, well into 8 figures for the Childrens Hospital at Hackensack Medical Center here in NJ. He operates The Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer in Ribera, New Mexico and funds the entire cost of transportation and operation.

He's made a gross error. It wasn't in judgement, there was no preconceived thought behind the statement, it just flew out. If you listen to the Iman for over 25 years like I have, you know the statement was not intended in the manner it was received. He's disparaged Jews, italians, Mexcians, Blacks Whites, politicians, everyone. He does it not to hurt, but to make fun of someone or the situation. Still, he said what he said and now is paying dearly for it.
I fear the true loss here will be the The Imus Ranch and the wonderful expereinces he offered to children with cancer.
You let Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons on CNN and all hell breaks loose. The same Sharpton that calls people rapists before they are even convicted.
Imus apologized and was willing to meet with the Rutgers girls. That should have been enough.

It's hard to admit, but I agree w/ everything Big is saying in this thread....
